INDOOR POOL TRANSFORMED BY HANOVIA UV SYSTEM
Keith Weidner, the owner of Norwood swim school in Adelaide, beside the pool
Keith Weidner is no newcomer when it comes to owning and operating swim schools. He has been in the swim school business for many years, having interests in a number of swim schools in South Australia’s capital city, Adelaide. “As a swim school owner, the best thing you can do for your pool is to provide a pleasant
environment,” says Keith. “If the pool is sparkling and the air is fresh you will find swimmers, staff and parents will all be satisfied – and let’s face it, perception is everything!”
Keith installed his Hanovia UV system into his Norwood swim school two years ago. He has interests in both the Seaton and
Mount Barker swim schools, both of which already have UV systems. “I did my research and knew the reputation and reliability of the product was outstanding. Having already had very positive experiences with the UV systems at our other two swim schools, I was very confident the Hanovia system would deliver similar results for Norwood. Our chloramines were up around 1.5 parts per million (ppm), but after introducing the UV system, they are now routinely in the range of 0.3 – 0.7 ppm, which is a very positive outcome.” Prior to UV, Keith would use a combination of super chlorination and water replacement to keep chloramines in check. These measures have now been significantly curtailed. Keith comments that “keeping chloramines consistently below the 1 ppm level is nearly impossible without the use of UV, especially when you have a pool that has a very high load and is only 350,000 litres.”
HIGH PROFILE POOLS MOVE FROM CHLORINE TO POOLSAN
The move to chlorine free methods of keeping high usage swimming pools clear, clean and safe continues to have new supporters. Two high density pools – one from a high profile swim school, the other a five star London hotel – have been praising the benefits of moving from a chlorine system to PoolSan, a developed liquid form of the traditional ionisation process containing copper, zinc, gold, aluminium and silver ions that eliminate the need for chlorine. Earlier this year the prestigious five star Landmark Hotel and Spa in Central London converted its pool to PoolSan after being aware of concerns from its guests about strong smells and eye problems after swimming. They went looking for a low or non- chlorine alternative.
Chief Engineer Paul Moore said: “After very careful consideration and investigation we decided to change to PoolSan as part of our commitment to the environment and our Carbon Reduction Pledge. We were very pleasantly surprised with the ease of the changeover and the fact that we didn’t have to close the pool to do this. The pool clarity and air quality improved immediately and was noticed and commented on by the members. The removal of chlorine has had a positive effect on the staff and their daily routine.” Ian Smith runs SwimShack, the first ‘Total Immersion’ swimming studio in the UK. His swim better, faster and easier approach means his endless pool is very heavily used. “The body of water in my pool is not big. It’s about 3,500 gallons of water so its not a massive body of water. The pool is used almost every day so there’s a really important need to make sure that the water is clean and pure. “I have used PoolSan for some time now and it has made a great deal of difference. Nothing is perfect but before I switched to
Poolsan I was having real problems. I was using just chlorine but the usage of the pool was very heavy and the water was getting cloudy and causing real problems. Often the only option was to close down. It got to the point where I was having to give the pool real ‘shock treatments’ far too often and it wasn’t good. “PoolSan has made a difference. There’s no chlorine smell and the pool looks bright and sparkling and really clean. I would have thought that for a normal use pool then the recommended dosage of PoolSan would provide all the treatment anyone would need.” Said Celina Brown from PoolSan: “Our emphasis is always that PoolSan has been shown to be as effective as chlorine and is the perfect product for commercial sites that want to reduce their hazardous chemical usage and improve the quality of their pool water.”
