he discerning British consumer looking for a luxury purchase for the home it seems can’t resist a sauna or a steam room.

Figures for 2009 showed what could be record levels of interest. A steady growth in sales reveals that both saunas and steam rooms have entered the public psyche as a path to wellness as well as being a stylish addition to the home.

Once seen as an experience limited to a leisure club, spa or luxury hotel, they have both been added to the list of luxury items worthy of a serious home investment. Space is rarely a problem. Now what is available is a complete spa experience, sauna, steam room and shower – compact enough to fit into any standard bathroom.

What’s also clear is how things have changed in the style and look of saunas and steam rooms. No longer just a box, has allowed more flexible products, pleasing to the eye and worthy additions to a home. But the key to what has grown to be an important part of the wet leisure industry is still all about wellness.

The message about the benefits of both systems is now more accepted by the public.

Both have clear health benefits. A heavy sauna induced sweat really helps cleanse and rejuvenate your skin – much more than just a bath or shower alone. Both sauna and steam baths are therapeutic, but the high moisture content in a steam room is especially good for respiratory problems.

Sauna benefits include a strengthened immune system, improved blood circulation, enhanced detoxification processes and tension and stress relief. As your body increases sweat production to keep cool, your heart works harder pumping more blood at a greater rate. This provides many of the conditioning benefits of aerobic exercise. This sends a sort of wake-up call to your immune system. The result is an increase in the production of white blood cells and other disease fighting allies.

Dr Andrew Weill is a respected holistic practitioner. “When you take a sauna, the heat pumps up blood circulation near the skin and stimulates sweating. The Finns say a proper sauna elicits about a quart of sweat per hour. I generally encourage sweating. It helps the body rid itself of unwanted materials and improves general circulation.” For their part, steam baths have been

proven to be effective for conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis and allergies. More and more people initially turned to local leisure facilities in a bid to improve their fitness and wellbeing through the sauna and steam room experiences. For pool operators, this has offered a real opportunity to increase business and many commercial swimming
