PERFECT PAIR

Bill Fong fell just a pin shy of the perfect league session when he left a 10-pin after 35 straight strikes for his 899 series. But two bowlers, Earon Vollmar and Hakim Emmanuel, got the job done earlier this year. Vollmar became the third bowler in Ohio

state history to shoot 900 when he achieved the feat in his Monday Night All-Stars league on Jan. 19 at New Glass Bowl Lanes in Toledo, Ohio, becoming the 25th bowler in history to stroke 36 consecutive strikes in league play. The Toledo resident joined fellow Ohioans Lonnie Billiter Jr. and Matt Latarski, who bowled their 900s in 2006 and 2010, respectively.

Hakim Emmanuel, however, marked the first

time any bowler in his state, Massachusetts, reached 900 in league. The Stoughon, Mass., resident finished off the 26th 900 series during the Thursday Night Patriots Doubles league at Westgate Lanes in Brockton, Mass., on Feb. 19. One of the benefits of living in the age of

the smart phone is that there is bound to be someone nearby with a camera in hand. And that was precisely the case as Vollmar and Emmanuel capped off their amazing nights. Both bowlers’ final three strikes were captured on camera — as was the elation with which their fellow bowlers congratulated them.

TOUCH FOR VIDEO BACKWARDS LOGIC

‘BACKWARDS BOWLER’ ANDREW COWEN ENTERS RECORD BOOKS WITH 280 GAME If ever there truly were something you had to see to

believe, this is it. Andrew Cowen is putting the “backwards” in “backwards logic” with his, well, backwards approach to bowl- ing. Literally, the man bowls backwards. And judging from the results, it’s an approach more may want to consider. Cowen attracted the attention of RecordSetter.com with this performance, in which he shoots 280 — yes, even converting the one spare he left. — and captures the whole thing on video. RecordSetter.com subsequently designated the feat a record for “Highest Backwards Bowling Score.” Cowen, who shot the 280 at Don Carter Lanes in

Rockford, Ill., also brings a unique approach to the pressure that accompanies the final shots of a 300 game. “While it’s a lot of pressure in the 12th frame to throw a

strike for a 300 forwards, throwing it backwards, you can see everyone watching you in your peripheral vision, so it’s that much more pressure.” Cowen said.
