Ball Review
THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST
52 Hook 15 Length 15.5 Breakpoint Shape RADICAL: GREASE MONKEY WHACK
Manufacturer’s Intent: “The Grease Monkey Whack fills out the Easy Use line by creating a reasonably priced ball with a pearlized cover that delays the breakpoint on those hooking house shots,” says Mo Pinel. “It has plenty of backend to go with that easy length. With its predecessor, the Grease Monkey Pow [August 2014], you now have a set of bowling balls to cover all but the oiliest lane conditions without hurting your pocketbook.”
Core: The Grease Monkey symmetric core, used in the other Grease Monkey balls, has an RG of 2.54 and a differential of .048. We saw about 4 inches of flare.
Coverstock: The red and turquoise pearl and pur- ple solid coverstock is sanded with 500 SiaAir, then finished with Royal Compound, followed by Royal
Shine. It has an RA value of 2.01 and an effective surface grit of 5090.
Overview: The Grease Monkey Whack is a jacked Monkey compared to the original one (February 2014), giving us more hook and more backend. On the Stone Street pattern, we were able to play in the track area, but if we missed left, we saw corner pins until the pattern broke down. We were around 11 or 12 at the arrows to the seven-board at the 46- to 47-foot breakpoint. On the USBC Doubles/ Singles pattern, the Whack was a little too long for a good reaction on the fresh, but as the pattern developed we could open it up pretty easily. We got lined up on 12 at the arrows to eight at the 44- to 45-foot breakpoint. This is a good number two or three ball when the pattern breaks down or the heads start to burn, with the Grease Monkey
“PLAYERS WITH HIGHER REV RATES AND BOWLERS WITH LOWER BALL SPEEDS WILL LOVE THE FLOW THROUGH THE FRONTS AND STRONG BACK-END REACTION.”
Pow being a good number one ball for the price. This ball is definitely “whacked” on the light house pattern, as we were playing 14 at the arrows out to six-board at the 45- to 46-foot mark with a strong backend reaction to the pocket. The Whack is about two or three boards more hook than the original Grease Monkey, with a stronger back-end reaction. This ball is good for lots of bowler types. Players with higher rev rates and bowlers with lower ball speeds will love the flow through the fronts and strong back-end reaction when the lanes are starting to burn up.
