EVERYTHING BOWLING, ALL THE TIME JUST ANOTHER DAY AT THE OFFICE
PETE WEBER BECOMES FIRST BOWLER TO STAR IN 21-YEAR HISTORY OF ESPN’S “THIS IS SPORTSCENTER” COMMERCIAL SERIES. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ////
TOUCH FOR VIDEO If the “This Is SportsCenter” commercial that aired
during the 2015 United States Bowling Congress Masters TV show on Feb. 8 is any indication, the folks at “The Worldwide Leader” know Pete Weber well. The commercial featured Weber, making the 37-time PBA Tour titlist the first bowler to star in the 21-year history of ESPN’s “This is SportsCenter” commercial series, following SportsCenter mainstay Kenny Mayne out the door after another day of work at ESPN’s Los Angeles offices. Mayne, in a suit and tie and carrying a briefcase,
saunters past the receptionist with a “Good night” on his way out. Then follows Weber, cast as a
typical league bowler with a single-ball bag and a pair of house shoes. He hands the house shoes to the receptionist, which she quickly sprays with disinfectant, and also says “Good night” as he leaves. After a record five U.S. Open titles, two Tournament of Champions victories, and five additional majors to his credit, ESPN is on to something: When you win as often as Weber does, every victory truly can seem like just another day at the office. Weber told the PBA that his experience filming the gag was “wonderful,” adding that “Everyone in Los Angeles looked at me and said, ‘Hey, that’s Pete Weber.’
“Kenny asked me if I’d ever bowled a game over
300,” Weber continued. “I told him as a matter of fact, I bowl in a mixed handicap league with my wife Tracy and I shot a 300 with three pins of handicap, so I had a 303 game. I talked with Kenny for about a half hour. What a nice guy, very intelligent. Everyone was first class, A-one, as nice as can be. It was an honor to be part of it.” The PBA further reported that “The ‘TISC’
promotional series made its debut in 1994, and has featured a Who’s Who roster of legendary stars from almost every sport, except bowling, until Weber’s appearance.”
