Ball Review
THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST
59 Hook 14 Length 14.5 Breakpoint Shape LANE#1: DIFFERENCE
Manufacturer’s Intent: “The ball reaction is intended for the non-professional, everyday, aver- age league bowlers, trying to help them get the best reaction possible on heavier oiled lanes,” says Lane #1 President, Richie Sposato. “We also wanted to simplify drillings, making it easier for pro shops to please their customers, which is why there are only three necessary drillings listed on the drill sheet. If you’re bowling on medium/ drier lanes and/or are a higher average bowler, this ball can also be used with much success when polished to a higher gloss finish.”
Core: The Plated Patented Diamond modified two-piece asymmetric core has an RG of 2.46, a differential of .050, and the highest intermediate differential to date, .040. We saw over 6 inches of flare.
Coverstock: The purple and black Pure Grip solid coverstock is sanded with Neat–E (1500 grit). This ball has an RA value of 18.21 and an effective surface grit of 1440.
Overview: Pay attention to the drilling instructions. We followed the special instructions for a pin-down layout. This ball hooks out of the box on the Stone Street pattern. We played an inside angle, crossing the arrows at 17 and hitting the breakpoint around the nine- or 10-board at 46 feet, according to the CATS. The Difference was over an arrow more than the Typhoon (March 2014). We were five boards left with our feet, going around the line for the Typhoon. This new ball provided a strong motion off the breakpoint, more like a pin-up ball might. Despite being
a dull ball covering a good number of boards, the Difference didn’t burn up too early and continued well when it hit the pocket, keeping the pins low with good action and carry. The Difference was way too much on our lighter house pattern, even with some polish. On the USBC Doubles/Singles pattern, we played a deep inside angle, crossing the 20-board at the arrows and out to around seven-board at the 46-foot mark. With polish, we could move five boards right and play a more direct line to the track area with a strong but smooth reaction off the breakpoint. The Difference is a versatile ball with a lot of hook for bowlers who are rev- challenged or speed-dominant. It is difficult to throw it through the breakpoint. Just remember that it needs a good amount of oil, even for rev- challenged and speed-dominant players.
