THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST

55 Hook 15 Length 15 Breakpoint Shape STORM: CRUX PEARL

Manufacturer’s Intent: “We’ve paired that same revolutionary asymmetrical Catalyst core from the original Crux [December 2014] with our technologically advanced ERG pearl reac- tive coverstock to deliver a ball that produces jaw-dropping back-end motion and severe entry angle,” says Storm Technical Director, Steve Kloempken.

Core: The Catalyst asymmetric core has an RG of 2.50, differential of .052 and intermediate differen- tial of .017. This is the same core used in the peanut butter-hooking Crux. We saw 5 to 6 inches of flare.

Coverstock: The root beer scented, black, white and copper ERG pearl reactive coverstock is pol- ished with a 1500 grit polish. The RA measured 2.04 and the effective surface grit is 5100.

Overview: The Crux Pearl brings the back- end reaction that the original Crux needed. On Stone Street, even with the shiny pearl cover, this ball cut through the volumes of oil nicely with a good entry angle. We were able to have a good shot playing 14 at the arrows to seven- or eight-board at the 46-foot breakpoint. We even got a few back from five-board, the CATS told us, for rip-the-rackers. The Pearl is about four boards right with our feet on this pattern from the original Crux. On the USBC Doubles/Singles pattern, we could get lined up from 17 to eight on the fresh, but had a lot more area once the pattern opened up. The Pearl gave us a good amount of hold on this flatter pattern. This is an excellent number two ball in the arsenal for this pattern and complements the original nicely. We were still able to use this strong ball on the

light house pattern from a deeper 19-to-eight angle. The cover gets through the fronts easily and reads the backend with a strong reaction. Overall, the Pearl provides a strong, continuous motion through the 8- and 9-pins, splitting them nicely and keeping the 6-pin low into the 10-pin. The Crux Pearl is good for bowlers with lower rev rates who need some backend, as well as those with lower ball speeds who need length and drive on the backend.
