THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST

55.5 Hook 16 Length 16 Breakpoint Shape BRUNSWICK: MASTERMIND SCHOLAR

Manufacturer’s Intent: “The Mastermind Scholar with its Royal Shine finish provides maximum length through the heads, with mid-lane traction and an aggressive move on the backend on medium-to- oily lane conditions,” says Brunswick Product and Marketing Manager Bill Orlikowski. “It is the stron- gest hooking pearl ball in the Brunswick line.”

Core: The Mastermind Ultra Low RG asymmetric core has an RG of 2.488, a differential of .052 and an intermediate differential of .015. This is the same core used in the other Mastermind line balls. We saw about 5 inches of flare.

Coverstock: The blue, silver and gold pearl Honor Roll A+ Pearl coverstock is the pearl version of the Mastermind Intellect (October 2014) coverstock. It is sanded with 500 SiaAir, then Royal Compound

and finished with Royal Shine. It has an RA value of 6.80 and an effective surface grit of 3340.

Overview: The Scholar was a little too long at the breakpoint on the fresh Stone Street pattern to create a good entry angle. When the pattern broke down a bit, the Scholar was strong off the break- point and obviously cleaner than the Intellect. This is where it complemented the Intellect, because on the fresh Stone Street pattern we had a good look with the Intellect. On the USBC Doubles/ Singles pattern, we got lined up hitting 10 or 11 at the arrows with a breakpoint around the six- board. The angle to the pocket was a little steep and a little late, but if we stayed up the back of the ball we could control the breakpoint easier with a more direct line through the fronts (until the pat- tern opened up). The Scholar needs some friction

“THIS SMART BALL FITS INTO YOUR TOURNAMENT ARSENAL AS NUMBER TWO OR THREE WHEN THE LANES START TO OPEN UP.”

to give you the best chance to strike. This showed up on the light house pattern, as we were able to get inside the third arrow and open up the pattern to the eight-board around the 45-foot breakpoint. The asymmetric core allows the ball to read the midlane later than the Intellect, but with a stron- ger back-end reaction. This smart ball fits into your tournament arsenal as number two or three when the lanes start to open up or when you need to get through the fronts on medium to heavy lane patterns. It also works for bowlers with lower ball speed.
