Ball Review
THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST
AMF: PURE 57 Hook 15 Length 13 Breakpoint Shape
Manufacturer’s Intent: “The Pure creates the most overall hook in the AMF300 line, past or present,” says Thomas Restey, Director of Multimedia and Marketing for AMF. “Our strongest coverstock to date, the F90 Solid, is matched up with the medium RG, high differen- tial Combustion Core to provide pure friction on heavy volume lane conditions.”
Core: The Combustion symmetric core has an RG of 2.51 and a differential of .054. We saw about 5 inches of flare.
Coverstock: The power red F90 solid cover- stock comes out of the factory finished with the 1500-grit Neat “E” pad. We measured an RA value of 11.63 and an effective surface grit of 2360.
Overview: The AMF Pure was deceivingly stron- ger than it looked. It smoothed out the Stone Street pattern nicely, cutting through the oil with a strong roll through the pin deck. When we missed right, it just rolled back strongly with a predictable motion off the breakpoint. Crossing the 15-board at the arrows, we had all the way out to the five-board at 45 feet (according to the CATS). The Pure was five boards left with our feet and an arrow more hook than the Night Hawk SE (December 2014). On the USBC Doubles/Singles pattern, we were crossing the 14-board at the arrows out to the seven-board at the 45-foot mark. The coverstock of the Pure ate up the oil, allowing us to create a boomerang path to the pocket on this pattern. Out of the box, it was too much ball on the light house pattern, but with some polish it would give you a predictable reac- tion and enough length to smooth out the pattern.
“THE AMF PURE WAS DECEIVING- LY STRONGER THAN IT LOOKED. IT SMOOTHED OUT THE STONE STREET PATTERN NICELY, CUTTING THROUGH THE OIL WITH A STRONG ROLL THROUGH THE PIN DECK.”
When I think of pure, I think of smooth, and this ball is very smooth. It gives you the predictability of a urethane ball with the continuation, hook and hit- ting power of a strong reactive ball. It evokes a lot of confidence in throwing it to the right and watch- ing it roll back to the pocket. Rev-challenged and speed-dominant players will want it in their bags for longer and heavier conditioned patterns. The Pure will be the number one ball in your tourna- ment bag, and augments the AMF line nicely.
