Ball Review
THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST
52 Hook 15 Length 17 Breakpoint Shape ABS: JAPAN PRIDE MT. FUJI
Manufacturer’s Intent: “The Mt. Fuji ball features the Premium core that is specially designed to absorb hard impact for a bulldozing effect on the pin deck,” says ABS Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Jeremy Felton. “Paired with our JP65 coverstock at 1000 grit, bowlers will see longer and cleaner skid off the line as well as control in stretches of carrydown. Look for proven performance and reliable stability.”
Core: The Premium symmetric core has an RG of 2.48 and a differential of .042. We saw about 4 inches of flare with our layouts.
Coverstock: This volcano of a ball is surrounded by a sharp blue pearl JP65 coverstock sanded with 1000 grit and then
polished. It comes out of the box with an RA value of 2.80 and effective surface grit of 5400.
Overview: The Mt. Fuji is cleaner than the Accu-Swing X (January 2015), with a stronger backend reminiscent of the hockey stick shape of years gone by. It gives rev-challenged bowlers the backend they’ve always wanted. On the Stone Street pattern, we were three boards right at the arrows from the Accu- Swing X, crossing the 14-board at the arrows. According to CATS, Mt. Fuji made its move off the breakpoint at the 46- to 47-foot mark, whereas the Accu-Swing X made its move at 45 feet and read the oil more consistently — but Mt. Fuji was obviously more angular. On the 2014 USBC Doubles/Singles pattern, we could
play on the fresh around 16 or 17 at the arrows to the 45-foot breakpoint at the 7-board. This ball was too strong on the fresh if we grabbed the release more than intended, but we could see this as a number two or three ball in your arsenal when the pattern settles (carrydown), and you want to open up the breakpoint. On the lighter house pattern, we had to play an inside angle around 20 at the arrows, but could get it back from 7 at the 45- to 46-foot breakpoint with strong motion on the backend and strong drive through the pins. This is the third ABS ball we have reviewed, and it fits right between the Accu-Swing X and the ABSolution Bullet (March 2015). Mt Fuji lives up to its name: It flows easily through the front part of the lane and explodes off the breakpoint with a big bang through the pins.
