THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST
51 Hook 17 Length 17 Breakpoint Shape MOTIV: VENOM PANIC
Manufacturer’s Intent: “The Venom Panic is the first pearl ever released in the Venom line,” says Motiv Marketing Vice President, Scott Hewitt. “It is cleaner than the Venom Shock [April 2014] with a slightly stronger response to friction. Designed for light to medium oil condi- tions, the Venom Panic fits between the Venom Shock and the Tribal Fire [September 2014] on the Motiv Ball Guide.”
Core: The Gear core produces an RG of 2.48 and a differential of .034. We saw about 3 inches of flare.
Coverstock: The coral snake Turmoil MFP pearl reactive cover comes finished with 5000 grit LSP. We measured an RA value of 3.05 and an effec- tive surface grit of 4600.
Overview: The Venom Panic is a pearl that gives you enough length but with a strong backend and a good angle off the breakpoint. On Stone Street, when we missed inside we saw the corners stand more, but if we got the ball to the track area, it struck often and kept the pins low as they went off the deck. We were lined up around 12 at the arrows out to five or six at the 46-foot breakpoint. The Panic was at least a foot longer at the break- point than the Shock, and we were one board right with our feet. This ball would not be my choice for the flatter, fresh USBC Doubles/Singles pattern, because we had a little more over/under reaction, whereas the Shock smoothed the fresh pattern. The Panic would be my number two or three ball as this pattern breaks down. We could get in and open up the light house pattern because the Panic provided some hold inside and a lot of recovery to

the right. We were crossing 17 at the arrows and had it to the six-board at the 46-foot breakpoint. While the Shock would mellow out with a smooth reaction on this line, the Panic caused panic for the pins, because it came back with a vengeance, showing strong continuation through the deck. This ball is good for bowlers with slower ball speeds who need that kick at the backend with easy distance down the lane. This ball’s color will make it stand out on the rack, but the reaction will make it stand out more when it hits the lanes.
