Signalling Solutions Ltd (SSL), the Alstom/Balfour Beatty joint venture, which has delivered major signalling renewal works – including the modification of the Great Western Main Line to support new Crossrail trains – is reaching its seven year milestone. SSL was launched on 1 October 2007, as the sole route to market for the signalling products and services from both companies in the UK and Ireland. Managing director Steve McLaren says that now, after seven years, SSL is fully amalgamated to such an extent that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts – and the company’s success has been helped by the wealth of expertise its parent companies have in the UK and globally.
As
a leader in the provision of train control solutions in the UK, our core activities are focused on supporting Network Rail with its unprecedented investment in the UK rail network. Since 2007, we have worked successfully on key Network Rail projects, and the business has grown rapidly – both in size and diversity – with new technology opportunities becoming a key part of our future.
Moving forward with confidence is very much the company’s credo and our track record of achievement and success means that the outlook is very positive. Our main products are in the provision of train control systems, both train-borne and trackside – and we have the ability to integrate existing systems with the legacy infrastructure, and to introduce the latest new technology with the required safety assurance.
The complete range of SSL’s services spans conceptual design right through to full project delivery. This means we have considerable experience in signalling project management, cost planning, developing projects and value engineering – from the feasibility stage through to project close-out, testing and commissioning

Due to the diversity of signalling projects, we have a team of highly-competent people with a high degree of specialist skills, knowledge and on-site rail experience. We are the only UK signalling company working on all mainline railway business streams – interlocking, modular, ETCS TMS and train-borne. Interfaces between these technologies are critical – which undoubtedly puts SSL and our products in the best position to deliver our customers’ requirements.
