Energy, efficiency and sustainability
Phil McCabe is rail director at Hayley Group Plc, which provides engineering solutions and engineering consumables to all industries. Its growth over the last decade has been significant, and the company now turns over in excess of £100m. The group won its first significant rail contract in 2001, and has gained a wealth of experience and expertise in the sector during this time. McCabe describes some of the major challenges and opportunities regarding energy use in the rail industry.
T
he perception of carbon emissions and energy costs have shifted dramatically over the last decade, and Hayley Group recognised this as a threat to its customers’ overall profitability. Identifying the threat allowed Hayley to provide customers with information, and to develop a number of services designed to reduce carbon consumption, aimed at industrial applications.
The Climate Change Act 2008 heralded the world’s first legally-binding climate change target. The UK government has committed to reducing carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. This began impacting on UK industry in April 2010, with a requirement to report emissions, resulting in duties being imposed for high energy consumption.
About 70% of industry’s energy consumption is attributable to electric motors, and in January 2015 new EU legislation is being implemented that sets minimum efficiency levels. Many companies that Hayley has contacted regarding this were not aware of it. But by taking into consideration total cost of ownership, and switching to the higher efficiency motors now, Hayley has helped customers save significant sums of money.
Opportunities to increase efficiency do not end with electric motors. Hayley’s product experts have also identified that industrial gearboxes and pumps are generally over-specified for the job intended. This means that typical savings achieved are up to £4,000 per gearbox per annum.

On average, pumps only operate at 100% of their duty for 10% of the time. Hayley Pumps identified and implemented a saving of £397,000 for a quarry dewatering application (a case study is available describing this project).
Motors, gearboxes and pumps are commonplace across the rail network, with applications including: lifts, escalators, and maintaining water levels in underground metro systems and tunnels, etc.
Hayley’s Fluid Power Technical Team gives impartial customer advice. By applying their expertise to customer hydraulic and pneumatic applications, £800,000 worth of energy savings have been identified in the last six months.
Ben Noakes, Hayley Rail’s general manager, said: “When I walk around rail maintenance depots and hear that hiss of air leaks, I now know that means high energy consumption.”
These are just a few of many opportunities that Hayley Rail would like to bring to the rail industry, whether in
presentations at the Eaton Hotel on Hagley Road, Birmingham. The event is designed to help people become more energy efficient and reduce their carbon footprint.
During the visit attendees will see Hayley’s engineering works, which has worked with its clients to return gearboxes and other repairable items by modifying them – with new gear ratios and sometimes with new materials – making the equipment more efficient and reducing energy costs and carbon footprint.
This event is being supported by Shell lubricants and low emission fuels, Siemens Motors, Festo pneumatics components, Gates Fluid Power, INA-FAG Bearings (The Schaeffler Group), Simrit seals, EuroVacuum and others.
These partners will be exhibiting at Hayley’s engineering works in the morning and will have expert product managers available on site to discuss energy efficiency and sustainability.
