Constructing Custom House

Jordan Simpson, sales director at Technical Cranes, provides an overview of the year so far for lifting equipment supply to the rail sector.

T

echnical Cranes has seen continued growth in 2014 for rail sector contracts.

The major contract of the year so far was supplying a 35-tonne SWL (safe working load) goliath crane to Laing O’Rourke for a Crossrail project at Custom House in London.

The crane is a bespoke design for the lifting of prefab sections, for the construction of the new Custom House station.

It stands 20m high against the London skyline, with an overall beam length of 22m, of which one end of the crane has a 3m cantilever. The crane has been designed with a monobox leg on the cantilever end so that prefab sections can

pass onto the cantilever without interference with the leg. It can lift up to its full SWL capacity of 35 tonnes on the cantilever.

The installation had to be carried out over a 51- hour weekend possession because of its close proximately to the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) line. The installation took place using a 350-tonne and 200-tonne mobile crane, in the tight constraints of Victoria Dock Road.

Other rail sector contracts for the year so far include a new 20-tonne SWL crane and gantry for Electromotive Diesels, for its engine storages facility in Doncaster and at Brush Traction, Loughborough, where Technical Cranes has installed a new 27-tonne SWL

crane complete with auxiliary hoist. Finally, at Wabtec Rail, Doncaster, Technical Cranes has completed the installation of a 15-tonne SWL crane and gantry system.

As UK partner for SWF Krantechnik, which manufactures some of the world’s most advanced and sophisticated lifting equipment components, Technical Cranes is able to offer a wide range of crane and lifting products for everything from standard to the most challenging of lifting requirements.
