Events on the horizon
ntries are open for the second UK Rail Industry Awards, which will take place on 19 February 2015 at the Battersea Evolution venue in central London.
E
There are 23 categories covering all aspects of rail innovation and technology, and some special awards recognising the achievements of individuals.
The 2014 event was an amazing success, and having interviewed all the winners myself, I know how valued the awards were for those who took part and attended on the night. The event, produced by Rail Technology Magazine to recognise all of the hard work out there, was hosted by comedian Josh Widdicombe, while Network Rail chairman Richard Parry-Jones gave the keynote speech (it’s available online and worth a watch if you haven’t seen it yet). The then-rail minister Stephen Hammond MP delivered an address via video link.
Entering the awards is free and organisations can enter multiple categories if they wish. Our high- profile, pan-industry panel of judges joins us again this year to ensure the award decisions are independent, unbiased and expertly-made.

Details of all the award categories, how to enter, and the criteria by
which award entries are judged are available at the event website,
UKRIA.com, and the deadline for entries is Thursday 16 October.
There are also plenty of opportunities to sponsor this prestigious event – get in touch on 0161 833 6320 – and of course to book a seat or table. Again, details are online.
Coming up even sooner than the UK Rail Industry Awards is another Rail Technology Magazine event: the High Speed 2 The Northern Hub Dinner in Manchester on 6 November. The networking dinner is also a chance to hear from senior figures involved in the delivery of the major railway upgrades in the north west, the major opportunity for the region that is HS2, and to debate the measures being taken. HS2 chief executive Alison Munro is a keynote speaker, and Network Rail’s route
managing director for the LNW route, once Dyan Crowther’s replacement is confirmed, will also address the audience at this black- tie event.
There will also be a Q&A discussion with Jon Lamonte, chief executive of Transport for Greater Manchester; Nick Donovan, director of First TransPennine Express;
Charlie
Cornish, group chief executive of Manchester Airport; and Roger Marsh of Leeds LEP, a member of the HS2 Growth Taskforce. There are still some seats left for this great event; turn to page 6 or go to the RTM website to find out more.
That doesn’t leave me much room to talk about the excellent content in this edition of RTM – so read on and find out for yourself!
