RECRUITMENT

Students attending iRail 2014 in Derby took a trip to see Bombardier’s train factory in the city.

Work set to begin on £8m Derby UTC Plc, Bombardier, Toyota

Work is set to begin on the development of the £8m Derby Manufacturing

University

Technical College (UTC), after planning permission was granted by Derby City Council.

BAM Construct UK, which has offices in the city, will build the facility on Locomotive Way, Pride Park, which has been designed by Maber Architects.

The UTC will open in September 2015 for the first intake of students in years 10 and 12 – providing young people with the skills needed in engineering and manufacturing, including the rail industry. UTC partners include the University of Derby, Rolls-Royce

Motor

Manufacturing (UK) Ltd and Derby City Council.

Once up and running, the UTC will have capacity for up to 600 young people aged 14 to 19. They will study core GCSEs, A-levels and engineering qualifications enhanced by project-based learning, work placements, employer site visits and industry expert lectures.

Philip Morris, Derby Manufacturing UTC Principal Designate, said: “With planning permission agreed, we are looking forward to seeing the building develop.

“We already have a number of

young people who have submitted expressions of interest for joining Derby Manufacturing UTC next September and applications are now being taken and formalised for our first cohort of students in year 10 and year 12.”

RTM reported in our last edition on comments by Lord (Kenneth) Baker of Dorking, who introduced the national education

curriculum secretary while in the

1980s and has more recently championed UTCs.

He said: “The schools are very demanding. They have a working day of 8.30am-5pm, every day, with shorter holidays. But we discovered that one of the early

adoptees of the UTC was the rail industry because Network Rail, Crossrail and TfL were finding great difficulty in recruiting young people to work on the railways because [from the outside] it appeared to be a ‘Victorian’ industry, and it wasn’t as exciting as computing.

“If you don’t attract good technicians and engineers at a young age, you haven’t got much of a future, frankly.”

Derby is one of 50 UTCs being developed across the country, and there is an update on progress at another UTC with rail connections, at Crewe, on page 58.
