STAFF & SKILLS

Why do businesses need to train their staff in sustainability?

Ian Davison is a principal environmental consultant with The QSS Group, a specialist railways consultancy operating in the UK and internationally. Increasing employee’s awareness of sustainable business practices is good for business and the environment, he argues.

B

usinesses today are beset with environmental requirements as well as

the need to be good corporate citizens within the communities within which they operate. Governments are continually driving us to use less, waste less and impact the environment less in order to preserve valuable resources for future generations.

Legislation on waste, energy, emissions, etc, have put wide responsibilities on businesses, making it imperative for them to have access to employees with an understanding of environmental issues. Knowledge of sustainable approaches to business can drive new innovation and practices which benefi t the environment and businesses.

Signifi cant benefi ts are available to businesses

that take advantage of environmental technologies. For example, the advent of smart metering in the UK has given all businesses an opportunity to identify where energy is being used within an organisation and to reduce consumption.

Benefi ts can be seen through:

• Driving down costs for the business and benefi ting the environment through energy and waste reduction initiatives; • Reducing a business’s environmental impact all along its value chain; infl uencing suppliers and impressing potential customers with good environmental business practices; and • Developing knowledgeable staff as a key enabler for eff ective environmental

initiatives within a business.

The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and City & Guilds have designed a range of courses to provide businesses with the skills they need to help make

good environmental decisions and reduce their environmental footprint.
