Petit park history

The dream of illustrator Albert Uderzo, Parc Astérix opened on 27 April 1989 after an initial investment of 780 million francs, or about €119 million in today’s money. Located in Plailly towards the north east of the French capital, more than 1.3 million guests visited in the first season.

The park features a wide variety of themed attractions including a dolphinarium, stunt show, gladiator show and circus, most dedicated to tales, lands or characters featured in the Astérix comics and books. The biggest single investment in the park’s history was made in 2012 when it opened an Egyptian-themed area at a cost of €20 million, headlined by the B&M inverted coaster OzIris (one of six rollercoasters now featured).

When it opened back in ‘89, management of the park was entrusted to two companies, the utility provider Générale des Eaux and the hotel group Accor. but now it is owned and operated by Compagnie des Alpes, the successor to previous owner Grévin et Compagnie. Last season, with 1.62 million guests, Parc Astérix was overtaken as the third most visited theme park in France by Puy du Fou. The country’s top two parks are both located at Disneyland Paris, which has been a strong local competitor since it opened in 1992.
