Deep Sea Odyssey Chimelong Ocean Kingdom

n interesting new dark ride opened at the beginning of the year at the Chimelong group’s new Ocean Kingdom resort in Zhuhai, China. Deep Sea Odyssey uses an Omnimover ride system from Mack, with content by Falcon’s Treehouse. Located beneath the park’s Grand Aquarium, the attraction takes riders on an immersive scenic underwater experience,

featuring a combination of themed scenes, animated media content and breathtaking glimpse’s of the aquarium’s tropical fish and, if you’re lucky, its whale sharks. Orlando-based Falcon’s Treehouse (FT) was responsible for creating the character Pao- Pao, a whimsical fish-like submarine, and the protagonist of the show. The FT team created and assembled each scene digitally, including majestic underwater environments, sinking ships and secondary characters such as whale sharks and ancient undersea dinosaurs.

One of the highlights of the attraction, in addition to the fish encounters, is a large

undersea volcano created using a digital projection dome. As they pass through the dome and circle the volcano, Deep Sea Odyssey passengers witness the red hot visual display of an undersea volcanic vent. As executive producer, Falcon’s Treehouse brought all the ride and show elements together on site in Zhuhai. It also programmed the attraction to ensure the show sequencing and ride timing was perfectly synchronised.

ektris tells the story of a mining planet being invaded by aliens who want the control of the resource and are putting the local miner population into slavery. The objective of the players in the dark ride is to free them from the evil and bring them back and their mine to "our" civilisation.

While the Dark ride is based on an unsurprising storyline, Alterface

Projects has succeeded in making it a one of a kind by turning traditional dark ride techniques into interactive gems. Vektris is a festival of sophisticated animatronics, heavy theming, interactive special effects and a very neat integration of the interactive video screens into the themed environment. The company has also added a « mission impossible” touch in the form of an interactive laser maze which needs to be disarmed by the players one after the other. Doing so, the ride was also the opportunity to introduce the revolutionary « bidirectional interactivity »: if

the players do not succeed in eliminating a threat or a trap, this one will harm them and make them loose very precious score points. At the heart of the whole setup, beats « Salto ! », the interactive show control system from Alterface. Thanks to its modularity, the making of the dark ride has been very smooth and all the wildest demands of the client could be met, in time and within budget.

Kingdom Quest is probably today the most popular dark ride in the world. With twelve live setups on all continents and another three in the making, this compact and competitively priced dark ride has been attracting millions of youngsters into the Lego Discovery Centres. The recipe of this success is simple: a touching story, appropriate use of technology when needed and a perfect fit for the demographics of the centre. Kingdom Quest is therefore simple and effective and the magic of the media interactivity operates day after day. With this product, Alterface has demonstrated that there is no need to beat the mega dark rides to have a product that keeps its attractive power over years. alterfaceprojects.com
