WHAT’S NEW IN NEW JERSEY? Morey’s Piers

Will and Jack Morey of Morey’s Piers in Wildwood, New Jersey, have spent the past five years disagreeing on a simple name for their beach bar on 25th Street and the beach. Previously it was called Oasis Café and Soggy Dollar, however since the brothers couldn’t

agree on what to call it, it’s now the Stubborn Brothers Beach Bar + Grille! The bar’s laid-back mood, tropical drinks, beach-influenced fare and great views of dolphins jumping out of the Atlantic have made it the spot to hang up your wet town and grab a cold one after a hot day on the beach. Elsewhere in Wildwood, a new dog beach has been opened. “Dogs are part of families, so why not allow them on the beach?,” asks Jack Morey, executive vice-president and COO of Morey’s Piers. “The city deserves a lot of praise for the courage to allow dogs on the beach.” Morey’s Piers, which already allow dogs into one of its waterparks for the last day of

the season, is doing its part to enhance the dog beach by building what Jack Morey describes as, “a ‘kick-ass’ fire hydrant” (pictured, right). The 24ft-high (7.3m) structure is being built by the artists from Morey’s ArtBox project using the tower from an old snake slide. The finished article will feature showers for beach bathers and their four-legged friends.

Steel Pier

In Atlantic City, the Steel Pier has added two new rides for 2014, a 9m (30ft) Drop ’N Twist tower from SBF/Visa and, pictured here, some Bertazzon bumper cars and an

accompanying pavilion by the same manufacturer. “We’re doing better than last

year,” smiled park president Tony Catanoso when Park World stopped by recently. “Last year’s attendance was affected by poor weather.” After a $23 million purchase and renovation in 2012, the Steel Pier is moving ahead with the next phase of its redevelopment plan. Planned for 2015 is a 235ft (71m) Ferris Wheel from Technical Park, which for a few years will be the tallest attraction of its kind the on the US east coast.

Gillian’s Wonderland Pier

Over in Ocean City, Gillian’s Wonderland Pier has added three rides for 2014, all moved from the family’s former park in Sea Isle City. Added are a Chance Mini Carousel (pictured), SBF/Visa mini bumper cars and a Spring Ride by Moser Rides called Bear Bounce.

Playland’s Castaway Cove

Scott Simpson has added three new rides to Playland’s Castaway Cove on the boardwalk in Ocean City. He has managed to shoehorn in a Chance Buccaneer pirate ship (pictured), an 8m (26ft) Moser Spring Ride and a new Speedway mini- Whip ride from Zamperla in which half the cars are jeeps and half race cars.
