Summer’s here, so let’s all go to the beach! If you live in Madrid – more than 300km from the coast – a day trip is out of the question. But now residents of the Spanish capital can enjoy the next best thing. Parque Warner Beach (see page 50) debuted in June, courtesy of Parques Reunidos. Like the same group’s Mirabilandia Beach in Italy, the waterpark is available to visitors of the main park (in this case Parque Warner) for a token fee on top of regular admission, rather than as a standalone attraction. As with the new Agua Mágica at Isla Mágica in Seville from the Looping group, this is a clever way of instantly recouping some of the investment, while offering a value-for-money upgrade and attendance boost to the existing facility. But this is not the only new park to open in Europe this season. Three years after the debut of Rainbow MagicLand, the Rome area gets a brand new theme park in the shape of the long-awaited Cinecittà World, built at a cost of €250 million (page 30). In Paris, Disney is believed to have spent hundred of millions of euros just on one attraction, Ratatouille L’Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy at Walt Disney Studios Park. Read about this and loads of other new dark rides starting on page 36. Meanwhile in Orlando, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s new Diagon Alley extenstion at Universal Studios Florida is another multi-million project, with a dark ride (Escape from Gringotts) at its heart.
In the latter two projects, neither operator will go public on either the budget or the list of suppliers. What we can tell you is in that in each case they have looked outside the amusement industry for some of the key ride technologies. Whilst the major manufacturers in this industry – many of which we are proud to count as supporters of this magazine – do a great job, sometimes it’s good to look a little further for some fresh inspiration.
