parkworld-online.com DARK IN THE PARK
As well as some of the rides we have already highlighted over the previous pages, there are some massive new attractions that have opened this season, which fall partly or wholly into the dark ride category. Allows us to offer you a quick update.
Who could forget Escape from Gringotts, another multimedia dark ride/coaster hybrid not wowing guests at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s new Diagon Alley extension at Universal Orlando? Turn to page 32 if you already have. Wonder Mountain’s Guardian opened in May at Canada’s

Wonderland outside Toronto and combines the excitement of a rollercoaster with 3D animation, interactive gaming experience and hidden drop finale. Its fantasy-filled storyline and computer-generated characters were develop by Triotech, which also supplied the interactive technology. German company ART Engineering was responsible for the ride system. Canada’s Wonderland owner Cedar Fair is understood to be rolling out similar attractions to some of its other parks in North America over the coming years. See our full ride profile in last month’s issue. Entertaining guests since the start of the season at Vialand in Istanbul, Fatih’in Ruyası (right) is a $20 million boat-based dark ride with a storyline focused on the conquest of former Constantinople by Fatih Sultan Mehmet. It features eight themed sets including two replica ships and almost 150 animatronic characters from Heimotion, plus a ride system from Intamin that can accommodate up to 1,000 people passengers per hour.

last year, but consider La Machine à Voyager dans le Temps (
bit.ly/1pX6qtC) at Futuroscope in France a new attraction for 2014. Featuring cheeky characters from the computer game and animated kids’ TV series Les Lapins Crétins (Rabbids), the time machine experience replaces the park’s former Les Animaux du Futur dark ride, using the same ETF transport system. Responsible for the rabbit-themed refurbishment was the Dutch design firm Jora Vision, working alongside Les Lapins Crétins rights holder Ubisoft. Should you want a Rabbids-themed dark ride at your park, speak to Alterface Projects in Belgium, which has since teamed up with Ubisoft to develop further attractions featuring the IP. Already in soft opening phase, Arthur au Royaume des Minimoys at Europa-Park in Germany (pictured below) features a first-of-its-kind suspended ride system from Mack, with both slow scenic portions and faster coaster sections. Inspired by Luc Beeson’s animated Arthur films, the attraction’s theme was chosen to appeal to the park’s French guests, but should offer plenty of immersive action for everyone else. As part of the attraction, Europa-Park has also installed a few other themed indoor rides including a family tower ride and Zamperla Jump Around. More soon in Park World.
