THE BIBLE IS BACK!

80 BIKEBIZ FEBRUARY In association with

Martin Ingham (left) and Chris Giles (right)

How long has the Cycle Division been in business? We have been trading 12 years. A few of us have been in the business longer than that, working for J Hartley Dawson.

Have you always focused on bread and butter products? Yes. Bread and butter is our foundation. We’re totally focused on the IBD’s needs and supporting the workshop. We do a lot of brand names but we feel most at home selling hard parts. We have a particular end user in

mind which generally falls in the leisure cycling demographic: Someone who neither knows or cares how to fix their bike. These people just want to ride their bike and there are lots of them out there. They don’t go on the ‘net. After all, the internet cannot repair a bike. They go to their local IBD instead.

What’s the thinking behind offering replacement parts packaging-free? If a part is ordered with a particular repair in mind then why pay for packaging which will inevitably be thrown on the workshop floor? We run two prices and the same item can be bought on one of our D2O cards at a slightly higher price. Given the savings offered we admittedly sell very few carded items in comparison! All loose hard parts sold are supplied clean in a sealed bag. We won’t just ‘chuck’ them in a box and ship them for the dealer to find them scuffed, etc.

Have any of the brands you carry been especially popular of late? We’re not completely about bread and butter and if you want a range of accessories just that notch above then RavX is the brand we push. This is a range of great quality product,

packaged well. Also Sturmey Archer keeps growing. Hub sales alone are proving popular especially as more people realise the benefits of our wheel building service. When it comes to transmission parts we leave that to Sunrace, who we see very little in the way of returns for. Closer ties with Schwalbe and Oxford Products are also proving fruitful.

What are your ambitions? So long as the weather is as good as it was last year we should all have a good 2014. The Tour de France Yorkshire route passes by Cycle Division HQ and it’s going to be massive. You can feel the excitement growing and there are all sorts of plans to celebrate the occasion. Everybody will see this. This gives us confidence and our plans are to invest further to cement our reputation amongst our customers. We don’t deal with every shop in the country so we’ll pursue more customers. Of course we’ll add to our range too. We’ll visit the Shanghai Cycle Show to further exploit the growing benefits in dealing direct with China. This visit is also intended to further develop our wheel building division in Barton Upon Humber. As always, our focus is on the customer and consistently providing them with great deals and great service.

How can retailers get in touch? If it’s a catalogue you want or access to our website then call Martin or Jonny on 0845 0508 500. If you speak to them nicely they might include a free mug in your welcome pack! If you call on a mobile and your tariff dislikes 0845 numbers then you can call on 01484 456137. There’s always emailing too – sales@thecycledivision.com.
