MYSTERY SHOPPER

West Yorkshire borders

Velocity Cycles, Huddersfield

With easy access to proper countryside on and off-road, West Yorkshire is a former stomping ground for Mystery Shopper, so he dusted off his flat cap and whippet to go incognito (somewhat stereotypically) in search of off-road capable bike lights…

VELOCITY IS on a main thoroughfare in a popular and affluent area of Huddersfield, with a smart and clean exterior that doesn’t scream ‘bike shop’. Inside, there is a workshop at the far end of an open plan sales floor with a small counter to the right. There are some excellent brands on offer, though arguably slightly cluttered, with P&A seemingly not in logical positions. Walking to the back of the shop, which has bike bits propped up as an overspill of the workshop, I spoke to the sales man who pointed to the selection of commuter lights. With nothing appropriate I pressed further and he offered me a Serfas box and then a Lezyne Demo box, but sadly without much explanation. The Lezyne Demo box had one solitary light in that wasn’t charged, and one that was not ideal for off-road (though he was prepared to offer me that one for a good deal). Overall, the shop and its range had room for improvement. The sandwich shop next door however was excellent.

16 BIKEBIZ FEBRUARY

Earnshaws, Huddersfield

I REMEMBER this shop as just a motorbike dealer, though it has now converted a third of the space into cycling, billing itself as a Two Wheel Centre. Good move. The product offerings are great, with offerings from Lapierre, Nukeproof and the Todays Cyclist marquee amongst the brands. I was greeted warmly and the sales assistant was disappointed to not have any off-road stock available, having sold the last set earlier that day. He showed me a One23 brand Triple 1800 in the catalogue then went to fetch his from the basement, which was attached to his bike. He showed me the various functions and explained its benefits, saying that stock would be available in the week. He also explained the Duo 2000 from the same brand. I was impressed by his easy salesmanship and the unexpectedly great shop. He did everything he needed to sell me the light.
