‘Significant resources’ are being committed to the premium electric bicycle brand by new owner By Jonathon Harker

PANTHERWERKE AG has swooped in to save electric bike firm AVE from potential insolvency. The AVE e-bike brand has become

known for build quality in the past few years, with the majority of its catalogue based around the renowned Bosch mid- motor system. However, ‘poor market conditions’ coupled with reportedly late deliveries were blamed for the firm’s disappointing recent fortunes. Pantherwerke’s move was revealed

days before the brand exhibited at Core Bike Show with UK distributor EBC. EBC managing director Paul Stanforth,

said: “This is good news for AVE and EBC. Pantherwerke is one of Germany’s oldest bicycle companies having been established over 100 years ago and has an excellent and well-deserved reputation for producing quality, cutting-edge bicycles. “The new owners have committed significant resources to further developing the Ave band and its e-bike models. Production will commence during March for delivery of electric bikes ready for Easter. “Ultimately our retail partners and end

users will see further significant developments in this premium e-bike brand keeping them firmly at the front of this fast growing sector.” www.ebco-ebikes.co.uk

Car and e-bike share firm up for award By Jonathon Harker

CO-WHEELS CAR Club is one of four British sustainable travel schemes in the mix to win the 2014 Eurostar Ashden Award for Sustainable Travel. The Durham-based social enterprise is aiming to curb car over-reliance with a national network of car clubs. Electric cars and bikes as well as regular vehicles are all available to hire by the hour, so users don’t have to stump up for all the associated costs of car ownership but with the convenience of having a car – or e-bike – to use when required. Living Streets is also a contender for

the prize. Chief executive of Eurostar Nicolas

Petrovic said: “Since we partnered with Ashden in 2011 we have discovered some ground-breaking sustainable travel schemes in the UK, France and Belgium.

Each year the quality of entries increases and all demonstrate the impact sustainable travel projects can have on the environment. “The 2014 shortlist shows the breadth of innovation in sustainable travel. We

hope that by celebrating the contenders’ successes we will encourage more people to think differently about how they travel, and demonstrate that travelling by train, bus, tram or bike is often cheaper, easier and more efficient than driving or flying.”
