skills in the overhead line sector. Part of a network of centres operated by a co-operation agreement between Carillion Rail and SPL Powerlines, the Coatbridge facility delivers a three-stage programme, which enables trainees to earn the skills and qualifications to work on railway electrification projects on the UK rail network. During the programme, trainees work

N

towards qualifications from industry body Overhead Line Equipment Competency (OLEC) at level 1, 2 and 3. Modules include Personal Track Safety (PTS), manual handling and harness use through to working on Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) under supervision.

Once the main body of the training

programme is complete after a year, the trainees will be placed on an OLEC3 course, which, after passing and a period of mentoring and assessment means they will be able to work unsupported on OLE projects. It is estimated that by 2016, the rail electrification sector will need upwards of 2,000 skilled linemen to meet the level of work expected to be delivered on the UK rail network - ten times the current capacity.

ports agency and innovation consultancy Pro Sport Connect has teamed up with the PFA (Professional Footballers Association) to create and deliver a combined basic signalling and Mod 5 test assistants’ course.

S The aim of the eight-week course is to help

professional footballers whose careers have come to an end or been curtailed due to injury, make the transition into the rail industry. Once the candidates, who are training at the Tube Lines training competence centre in Stratford, London have successfully completed the course they will be qualified as test assistants.

James Barrett of Pro Sport Connect said: ‘Lots of ex-

players come out of the game and don’t have too many options - they are not all on thousands a week; the rail industry is relatively lucrative and allows them to continue part-time in football. There is a real synergy between footballers and guys in the rail industry, everyone has a responsibility and has to be a team player. With an average of 2,500 people leaving the rail industry every year, this is a great scheme and one that everyone involved will benefit from.’ Pro Sport Connect has already been approached by a number of rail companies and agencies offering work to course graduates.
