Skills Academy for Railway Engineering), with the first students expected by spring 2015.
A As well as providing training for entry-level employees, the
academy will provide up-skilling to respond to new technological developments. Siemens’ train depot in Kings Heath, Northampton, will act as the national hub, with regional spokes in training centres across the country. The agreement between NSARE and the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS), with support from the DfT,
state-of-the-art academy to address the UK’s future skills shortage in traction and rolling stock has been agreed between Siemens and NSARE (National

Phyllis will be dismantled and her 130 metre-long trailer system will be removed from the tunnel via the recently completed Fisher Street shaft. Crossrail is asking Londoners to submit ideas for items to be included in a time capsule at the Farringdon site to mark the first completed tunnel. Those with the winning suggestions will have the opportunity to be among the first to visit the completed tunnel later this year.

will provide half the funds required, with Siemens contributing the other 50 per cent. Under the agreement 50 per cent of the academy’s training capacity will be released to the wider UK industry, with the remainder used by Siemens’ own employees. Currently some 13,500 people work in specialist traction and
rolling stock roles across the UK, with the future skills shortage forecast to be around 4,500 people over the next five years - caused by the combination of an ageing workforce, the technological advancement of rolling stock and investment and growth in the industry.
Thousands will pass through its doors Business Secretary Vince Cable said: ‘This academy will see thousands of trainees pass through its doors and is a great example of government working in partnership with business to tackle barriers to growth. National Skills Academies give business the chance to lead on developing the right skills and expertise, rather than industry training needs being decided by government. The repayable grant we are providing to NSARE will kick-start the building of the new training academy with Siemens and benefit the sector as a whole.’ Steve Scrimshaw, managing director of Siemens Rail Systems said the academy is ‘fantastic news for the UK rail industry and will provide a significant and much needed skills boost.’ Gil Howarth, chief executive NSARE said that ‘skills are the foundation of a thriving, hi-tech industry.’
