technology which houses adsorbent polymer material within a tube structure, ensuring moisture can be regenerated faster and more economically. Harnessing the best of existing desiccant and filter drying systems, the AMT dryer delivers significant weight savings and an improved drying performance. The polymer straws are tightly packed into a housing, similar to other desiccant dryers, but as they are more uniformly shaped than beads, they are unaffected by the vibration of the rolling stock. This means there is a consistent air flow through the tubes (reduced drop in pressure) and performance does not degrade over time. As there is no clay component, there is also no dust, which is a huge advantage over previous desiccant air dryer solutions.


the valves are available with a manual override feature, which allows the solenoid valves to be shifted when the coil force is not available due to loss of power or coil failure.


The valves have an operating pressure of up to 10 bar (145 PSI), and are designed for systems generating flow of up to 340 l/min. They are available in 24 VDC, 36 VDC, 72 VDC and 110 VDC variations. These products have recently been specified by a major international rail operator who approached Norgren when it was experiencing issues. Norgren’s approach was to modify one of its proven core technologies based on the


specific application requirements, and then supply samples to the customer for testing and validation. These products met all specifications over a four-month live train test, resulting in a highly prestigious contract for Norgren. Mark Wrigley, global sector head -

Optimised drying Norgren’s highly innovative new air dryer uses Adsorbent Media Tube (AMT)


During manufacturing, the AMT polymer tubes go through a water bath as part of the extrusion process. This has significant benefits – if the tube becomes saturated, there is no by-product or


traditional dryer, and is able to fill up the reservoirs more quickly, making it much more energy efficient. As a ‘fit and forget’ product, it has a life span of 18,000 hours or up to six years in most applications, which changes the status of the air dryer from a serviced item to a major refurbishment item. It has a considerably lower cost of ownership than its air drying predecessors and most importantly, it dries the air better to ensure a reliable flow of clean air from the compressor, keeping the railway network moving.


An unrivalled range


Three more innovations from Norgren which continue to generate significant interest in the refurbishment sector are multi-stage filtration systems for air preparation, reduced force actuators and mechanical pressure switches. Multi-stage filtration systems have been designed to ensure optimal air condition and increased reliability to protect downstream applications such as braking equipment, pantographs and automatic doors. Capable of removing oil and particles to the levels required by ISO8573-1, these systems also contain high- temperature filters to remove hot particles of carbon and oil. They are suitable for use between -40°C and +80°C and are simple to install and maintain. A pioneer
