What will GSM-R offer?

With a full system in place, GSM-R will allow:

• railway emergency calls • urgent call to signaller • reliable, good quality communications across the whole network

• communication from trains to remote stations along the route

• clear communication between driver and signaller

• improved train performance

are all aware that in today’s competitive rail market, meeting installation and commissioning deadlines is an important measure of success. Our ability to offer complex solutions that meet requirements and are delivered on time has led to our working on significant programmes with key customers.’ It’s not just technology and sector expertise that matters, however. Ramsey is also aware of the need to deliver systems that meet strict quality and safety standards. ‘We are ISO9001, ACOP1003 and GMRT2450 Safety Critical certified. That means that our customers have confidence in our ability to deliver systems and projects that meet the stringent requirements of the rail industry and differentiates us from our competitors,’ he added.

Rolling out the GSM-R system for Network Rail

One of the largest upgrade projects in rail communications, the global system for mobile – rail (GSM-R) will significantly improve communications on all trains across the UK, from all-stop commuter

trains to high-speed national services. The exclusive nationwide supplier of GSM-R installation kits, Multipulse is heavily involved in design fitment modifications across the fleets at all stages of installation and now supplies more than 750,000 individually packaged assemblies and components. The project is 70 per cent complete, with some rail operators already seeing benefits from successful installation.

Once the programme is up and running, Ramsey said, the company will continue to be involved with the GSM-R system. ‘There are more than 8000 train cab installation kits being put in place, alongside all the network infrastructure that is required for a large communications project like GSM-R. We will be responsible for the on-going maintenance, test equipment and spares for our part of the programme, helping to ensure that the system runs smoothly at all times.’

Introducing smart energy metering All rail operators are aware of DfT initiatives that encourage or require an improved environmental impact and better energy consumption. The increased traveller demands placed upon the network mean that reducing the number of trains running across the UK is not an option. Instead, operators need to look at ways of making existing trains and

As the recently-appointed sole agent for Saira Electronics (formerly Far Systems), Multipulse now offers a range of technologically-advanced energy metering and monitoring systems that allow operators to see exactly how much energy they are using and where they can become more efficient. With annual energy bills running into millions of pounds, Ramsey said these systems are as vital to train operators as smart meters could become to domestic energy customers. ‘We’re very excited to be offering Saira’s range of products, which allow operators to see exactly how much energy each train uses on each journey – electric or diesel. It’s a modular offering, so operators could also choose to add a monitor that keeps an eye on the on- board equipment, reducing energy use accordingly if they are not needed for the full length of the journey. It’s a smart, intuitive system that lets drivers see how to make their journeys more efficient, gives operators a detailed analysis of energy use and helps to promote good energy policies across the industry.’ Multipulse will also be offering local support for these products, including servicing for calibration, maintenance and repair facilities. Ramsey concluded: ‘The rail sector is in an exciting but challenging growth phase, and intelligent technology will have a key role to play in the success of the industry over the coming decades. Our understanding of the market and relationships with infrastructure companies, rolling stock builders, network operators and their partners means we can design and supply integrated systems that will help our customers to make the UK’s rail system an
