a question of loyalty
Nobody will work as hard for your business as you do, we all know that, but do you get the same loyalty with self-employed therapists as you do with employed therapists? I am afraid to say that largely no you don’t. I have previously carried out some business consultancy work with a local salon that has only ever employed self-employed beauty therapists, six years on the owner is wondering why she has no regular or loyal clientele!
With employed therapists you can set out specific terms within their contracts for example: • That they can’t set up a business or work within a certain mile radius of your salon.
• That they are not allowed to obtain client details from the salon as all clients details are the property of the salon – this is also a legal requirement. However, if your therapist is self-employed she can argue that the clients are ‘hers’ (so to speak) as it is her client base that she has built up and being self-employed it may be difficult for you to prove otherwise.
• That training carried out within 12 months of them leaving is to be paid for by the employee etc.

Such terms can help to safeguard the stability of your business in the event of them leaving.
However, with a self-employed therapist - as there is no contract - you can’t set out such terms that can be enforced in the event of them leaving. You must remember that although they are within your premises they are very much running their own business under your roof, which means that you run the risk of them damaging your profit – and perhaps even your reputation – in the event of them leaving. I realise that clients can and will follow any therapists, but you usually find that if an employed therapist leaves a salon a large majority of clients will continue to visit the salon as they are loyal to the salon itself.
add a complement
During the years I have had both employed staff and self-employed beauty therapists, and although I’ve had some very good self-employed staff predominantly the same thing kept occurring – they are running their own business and have their own agenda.
However, self-employed therapists can work if they offer treatments that are different, yet complementary to the treatments you offer. For example holistic therapists, nutritional therapists, sports massage therapists etc. Such therapists will add another dimension to your salon and perhaps attract another audience who will see what other services are available and start having other treatments with you. This can also be beneficial to the clients you already have as you will be offering another service to them, making it more convenient for them as they can get everything under one roof.

Taking this approach will still give you all of the benefits listed earlier, but presents less risk to you and your business – because in the event of them leaving it won’t affect your business in the same way as they are not offering the same service – all you will lose is the extra income until you find a replacement…and that is much more easily dealt with.
