Associated Beauty Therapists (ABT), sister company to Guild Press, have launched a new brand website, HAIRInsurance.co.uk

Dear Readers

As a beauty professional you cannot have escaped the release of the reviewbyNHSMedicalDirector Professor SirBruceKeogh, outlining actions to create a successful and safe cosmetic surgery industry in England andWales, which includes injectable fillers and light-based hair removal and skin rejuvenation treatments. Some have seen this as an attack on our industry, and as Iwrite,Habia are gathering key representatives of the beauty sector so that government can be presentedwith a united response before any decisions on legislation aremade.

Botox® and some other injectable products are prescription-only drugs and as such can only be prescribed by a doctor or a nurse prescriber. Sir BruceKeogh’s report recommends that all dermal fillers aremade prescription-only, and that all practitioners are properly qualified for all the procedures they offer, fromcosmetic surgeons offering breast enlargements to therapists offering ‘injectables’.Quitewhat these qualificationswill be, andwhowill be able to undertake training, hasn’t yet been decided so it is imperative that the recommendations put forward by industry representatives, such asHabia, are considered.

As shocking as it is thatwe hear somany horror stories of botchedBotox® treatments or see photos in themedia of trout-poutedwomenwho’ve visited a cowboy salon for a filler, these stories are not representative of our industry. We can but hope that regulationwill force unscrupulous salons out of business as the general public become able to identify and access qualified practitioners.

Essentially, as a savvy salon owner or therapist you willwant to followbest practice and staywithin the law, and by embracing the recommendations in the Reviewof the Regulation ofCosmetic Interventions (which can be read in full on the gov.ukwebsite) and following resulting legislation, you’ll ensure that you do so. As soon aswe hear developments on training recommendations and howlegislation affects you, you can be surewe’ll let you know.

With very best wishes,

Melissa Dennis, Editor Followus: @GuildNews
