An Economy class passenger flying from the UK to Australia, for example, pays £92 – rising to £94 in April 2013 – compared to £184 in Premium Economy, Business and First.

increases in APD.
It was pointed out that since APD was introduced here in 1994, annual revenue raised by the tax has increased by 250%. ABTA believes this is having a direct impact on the travel and tourism industry as it makes the UK less attractive for other countries to do business with and renders air travel less affordable for UK passengers. Meanwhile, Willie Walsh, CEO of IAG, the owner of British Airways, claims that increases in APD have already had a devastating effect on both industry and the economy as a whole. Adding that passenger numbers in the UK had fallen by some 7.3 million over the past three years alone, whereas they had risen just about everywhere else, he called for the tax to be phased out as rapidly as possible. Whatever the outcome of the UK debate, Premium Economy looks set to gain more followers. In a difficult financial climate, its seems that in many markets its time has come. •
