Awards, awardsChefs and chiefs
It’s time for the industry to pat itself on the back following three highly successful and energised industry shows in Long Beach and Seattle (see IFSA, APEX and AIX reviews in this issue). The US airline industry is looking positive and resilient with plenty to celebrate in the way of awards for creativity and achievement.
Congratulations to Singapore Airlines for winning Best Food & Beverage and Virgin America for winning Best Cabin Ambiance in the Passenger Choice Awards at APEX. Norwegian was winner of Best Inflight Connectivity and Communications.
But it is the Middle East carriers who are leading the way in terms of service and new product, with awards going to Oman Air, Emirates and Etihad in this year’s World Airline Awards and Qatar named Airline of the Year. Delegates at this year’s ITCA can be sure of great service and superb hospitality in Abu Dhabi and anticipate an entertaining Gala dinner highlighting the Mercurys Awards. Commenting on the event, Kevin Cox, Mercurys chairman said: “The judges saw 30 entries for these important industry awards and it was good to see that companies are working hard to develop new innovations and are investing in so many new products and services. Jo and Sue are looking forward to meeting you there!
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012 • ISSUE 53
The entire OBH team is attending this year’s WTCE and AIX in Hamburg so look out for Martin, Matt, Julie, Laura, Sue and myself! We might not be wearing our chefs’ hats at all times but we will be expecting to see you all at our Taste Challenge each morning at 9.30am where Jeremy Clark will be putting our chefs through their paces in the Taste of Travel Theatre (see page 30). Don’t miss it!
The TravelPlus Airline Amenity Bag Awards 2012 gala ceremony is also taking place during WTCE and Onboard Hospitality is delighted to support the Awards as the official trade media partner for the third year running. In this issue we debate the quality of vegetarian meals on board and check out the growing Premium Economy sector. We talk to Raymond Blanc about his fully- sustainable Business Premier menus for Eurostar and follow Roger Williams onboard a Pendolino en route to Pardubice in the Czech Republic. Peter Jones talks us through the guiding principles of catering management and we investigate the relationship between women and onboard meals. Finally, take a glance through our ‘Ones to Watch’ section on pages 97 to 102 where we feature all the exciting new products you can expect to see at WTCE. See you in Hamburg!
