Notable Legal Work

In 2010 Epiq developed mobile solutions, an on-site solution which enables the processing and review of documents at the client’s premises. This solution is designed to eliminate clients’ concerns around transferring highly confidential information outside corporate firewalls, and compliance with local data protection laws, which may prohibit the transfer of private data across borders.

Epiq uses mobile solutions to limit cost for onsite processing and review of sensitive cross border data

Mobile solutions was used to provide document review services for a multinational company headquartered in Europe with a global network of subsidiaries. The client was involved in cross-border litigation in 2011, and the proceedings relating to the substantive complaint were commenced in the U.S. The data of the key custodians was located both in the U.S. and in Switzerland. An on-site solution was required so that only data which was likely to be relevant and which was compliant with Swiss data privacy legislation was sent to the U.S. review team.

Once the data had been processed and filtered using search terms provided by the client, a mini network was set up on the server to give a team of Swiss reviewers access to the relevant data via a sub-case. Reviewers were presented with families of documents to be reviewed together and were able to select relevance tabs and highlight keywords on screen.

At the end of the first pass review, Epiq’s team was able to export the safe document set for loading to DocuMatrix™ in Epiq’s New York office. This enabled the data to undergo full issue review by the U.S. review team.

By using a combination of remote solutions and consulting expertise, Epiq was able to process the documentation and provide the resulting 240GB of data to the client’s internal reviewers within the timeframe stipulated. A team of up to 15 reviewers was then able to review approximately 1,200 documents each day.
