make yourself awinner

DeniseWright offers hints and tips on how to be a winner at thismonth's UKNail Tech competition

If I asked you to name five top nail techs that are well known in the industry, I bet they have all been competition winners at some point, and this is where theymade their name.

As a result ofmy achievements, I now run the competitions, develop new categories and judge all over the world.

I also havemy own salon and training academy. I aman international educator travelling tomany different countries, developing and testing new products for NSI. I appear on television, I write for all the trademagazines and blog for the Nail Angel website. I havemade five training DVDs, written for an educational book, I am on the skills teamfor HABIA who write the standards for government approval, write exampapers for City and Guilds andmuch more; all this just fromcompeting.

Believeme, competing opens doors of opportunity but I amstill doing what I love themost, and that is working in the salon withmy team.

maximise your potential

So I ask you this question: have you maximised your potential and got your name out there? Remember! It is not only about winning, it is about taking the time to develop your skills and raise your profile. It will help you to improve your everyday salon work, as you will see things in a different light and fromthis you will stand out fromyour competitors.

The first competition I entered I came 13th, but fromthat experience, looking atmy score sheet and finding out what the judges wanted and what I could achieve, I stepped upmy game and won the next time, and never looked back. It certainly raisedmy profile, and increasedmy business through free editorials and public awareness.

Being able to gain themost points possible in a nail competition is about you understanding the score sheets and looking at your entry through judge's eyes. Competition nails are not salon nails. You can be great in the salon, but for the competition circuit you have to look at the

nail differently. The judges are looking for perfection fromall angles.

Remember to read the rules and regulations in your Competitiors' Pack and take on board what the Floor Judge will be looking for.We also always have Floor Judges who are there formany reasons. Overall, they help ensure that the stated rules are kept to by all competitors and any observed breaking of rules is reported to the Competition Director.

However they also judge the competitors against good industry standards and practices, particularly ensuring health and safety requirements aremet in line with levels of qualifications in our industry. All these things should be what we do naturally so are easymarks to obtain. The Competitors' Pack outlines all of the criteria that Floor Judges will bemarking against, and they include what you are wearing, health and safety and product suitability.

At the end of the competition, I always say stay and get feedback fromthe judges, and also look at the winning nails.
