tadchee training

With people working hard to tighten their purse strings over the past few years, themantra formost people has become save, save, save - at home and in business too. But when it comes to post-graduate training, or Continual Professional Development (CPD), by not spending your business could get left behind!

Advancements in the beauty industrymove at high-speed, with new treatments popping up all the time, and new technologies making a break through too. In order to keep up with these advancements, a regular commitment to training and updating your skills is required.

Dermalogica believe that there are two very distinct sides to our industry. "The first is fast paced with ever evolving treatment techniques, high-techmachines and rapidly developing ingredient science. It is exciting to work in this sector of the industry, with huge potential for business growth and success.

"The second side is stuck in a 1950s time warp with old fashionedmethods that simply 'steamand cream' and fail to resonate with themodern customer. These businesses are struggling to survive the economic downturn as consumers no longer see their value."

If you want to stay relevant to what clients are looking for today, it's vital that you are constantly updating your skills to offer clients what they want, nomatter how hard the current economic climate is. By choosing not to build upon your skills you may be savingmoney in the short term, but in the long-termyou could be damaging your business. Therefore, it's important that you build CPD into your budget rather than let it fall to the sidelines and just be one of those things that you do if you have some cash left over.

"In this difficult economic climate, it is very tempting to batten down the hatches and get trapped in the mindset of saving money and not spending," says Elaine Stoddart, Director of Education for Sterex Electrolysis. "Unfortunately, not spending money means that no progress is made and that a business becomes static and stagnant. Enthusiasm and motivation from staff slowly deteriorates and the ensuing results is less clients and a less successful business or, maybe even one more business off the map."

Liz Badger, owner of FaceTheWorld, continues: "Both the beauty and holistic industries are becoming increasingly competitive. There aremore therapists and treatments than ever before and clients are more discerning but often with less disposable income. You need to set yourself apart by staying at the top of your trade, doing your research and promoting yourself.

“There aremany excellent small colleges and training schools offering accredited courses that add interest and value to your portfolio and sit alongside your current treatments.Your customers want value for money as well as something new - and they expect you to know the answers."

Updating your CPD points is whatmotivates most therapists to continue with their further training as and when they can, but according to Dermalogica, this shouldn't be yourmain motive. "Continual Professional Development is not about the points; it is aboutmoving with your industry to ensure that continued success and growth of the industry and the improvement of overall standards. If you still think you are a misunderstood skin therapist then perhaps that is a sign you need to up your game and get somemore training."

Besides, post-graduate training ismore than just an opportunity to develop your existing skills; it's a chance to show your passion for your industry and the work that you do as well as nurture your enthusiasmfor what you do. Plus, meeting up for training in a room full of other therapists passionate about our industry is also fantastic business development. It gives you the opportunity to meet and chat with like-minded people from all over the country, as well as share ideas that couldmake your salon stand out from the rest in your area.

staff investment

Further training for yourself is definitely one of yourmain concerns, however, if you run ormanage a salon, then your staff and their

skills should also be something you think about too.Any good therapist should be striving to keep their skills and knowledge up-to-date in order to continue to provide the best possible service that they can.

When you are employing staff, it's likely that you're looking for the best possible staff out there who won't let you down and will keep your clients coming back for more. By having staff that are educated it makes them credible; clients will trust in them and won't want to use any other therapist than their trusted, well-educated usual therapist.

Therefore, you may wish to think about investing in your staff too, which will not only keep them up-to-date, but it will keep your salon up there at the top as one of the most up-to-date and knowledgeable salons and it will be seen as 'moving with the times'.

"Investing in training is one of the best investments you can make," says Elaine. "Not only does this retain good, valued staff but it will motivate, challenge and inspire them, which, in turn, benefits your clients (who spread the word) but also keeps you one step ahead of your competition whilst allowing you to develop and grow your business without necessarily spending a small fortune on expensive new equipment."

To develop your business you may wish to consider paying for training for your staff, if this is something you have budgeted for, as, after all, not only will it benefit the individual undergoing training, it will also benefit your business too. If money is tight, as it is for many businesses at the moment, you may wish to offer a contribution towards your staff's training or allow them to take extra days off to undertake training. If your staff work hard this could be seen as a nice little reward for them and it will also give your staff a confidence boost when they see that you're investing in them and appreciating what they do.

Plus, helping your staff to gather an array of certificates is beneficial to the salon too. Being able to offer a grand display of yours and your therapists' certificates in the salon will look impressive and will instil confidence in your clients.
