gel polishes
Characterised by their traditional nail polish
bottling, a newgeneration ofGel products are revolutionising the file and polish
Consumers demand results so it is no surprise that the popularity of hybrid gel polishes have reached phenomenal heights since their relatively recent introduction into the UKmarket. Surely a non-chip, smudge free polish is the holy grail of nail fashionistas?
Characterised by traditional nail polish bottling, these gel polishes are the same depth of pigment as a regular nail lacquer. Formulations differ between brands but essentially some are gel with ingredients added to lower the viscosity – known as hybrid polishes, and some are 100 percent gel in amore liquid formula than traditional soak-off
gels.Thismeans they can be applied with the cap brush provided, like a regular nail polish.
Once applied, the coverage is thinner than a traditional Gel so that nails look like they have only been polished but the product has the duration of a Gel application, with many brands claiming theirs will last anything from14 days to three weeks.With care, I have personally experienced colour remaining chip-free for up to four weeks on fingers and a remarkable eight weeks on toes!
themain benefits of a gel polish
Its ease of application – inmost cases a full treatment can be completed in 30 minutes;
UV or LED curing whichmeans no more waiting for polish to dry or smudges on the way home;
Its durability so that clients can go away knowing that their salon shine nails will remain;
Its fast removal, inmost cases taking just 10minutes.
Youmay think that a product whichmakes the results of a salon treatment last longer will be detrimental to your profits, as clients may reduce their number of appointments with you. Fromspeaking to salon owners I have discovered that this is not true. Clients love the fact that they don’t have to wait for their polish to dry before leaving the salon, and that they can be confident that even after two weeks their nail colour will still look
good.They still want to enjoy their regularmanicure – they just know that they don’t have to worry about chips between appointments.What’smore, the recommended price for a gel polish treatment is twice that of a basic file and polish, and you can charge nominally for removal.
Gel polishes are particularly useful to manicurists and pedicurists who specialise in natural nail treatments. In essence, the majority of the gel polishes on themarket follow basic steps not dissimilar to a traditional polish application – basecoat, colour coat, topcoat. Each layer is cured under a UV or LED lamp before the next is applied.
If you are qualified you can usually train in a gel polish treatment protocol in around half a
day.Those not qualified would require a basicmanicure / pedicure qualification before they could carry out the gel polish training, but a full NailTechnician qualification is not required.
Performing like a gel and applied like a polish,Gelish, available fromNail Harmony, can be worn for three weeks without chipping or peeling.
“It can be said that Gelish helped pioneer an entirely new category in nails,” explains Georgie Smedley of Nail Harmony. “Since its UK launch inMay 2010 Gelish is now in upward of 8,000 salons, with the average cost of an amazing Gelishmanicure coming in at around £30.”
Between salon visits, a Gelishmanicure will remain looking perfect. Not only can it be worn by 100 percent of women, it is also gaining popularity amongstmen as part of theirmale grooming regime.
The Gelish collection features 102 different colours including the newAurora and Candy Land ranges, as well as Magneto – where two easy to apply formulas fuse with themagnet delivery system, on the cap of the bottle, to create sunning nail art. “Holding themagnet close to the nail realigns themagnetic particles in the gels to create a pattern; curing the gel then seals in the design, providing all the benefits of a gel-polish manicure,” explains Georgie.
Artistic ColourGloss Soak-Off Gel Polish, available fromLouella Belle, features colour in a bottle, with a twist-on cap and applicator brush. Lamp-cured to dry under a 45-watt LED light, it takes less than 30 seconds for nails to be touch- dry, whilst under a UV light it takes just twominutes or less.
