delivery of a SAM 600G automated grinding center—its seventh machine from Maus Spa, Campodarsego, Italy. Te SAM 600G grinding centers are the latest from Maus’
SAM line, which are appropriate for riser cutting and grind- ing in jobbing foundries. Te SAM 600G is an automated CNC grinding center with four-tool capacity and a product load/unload time of less than four seconds. It is built with a rotary turntable for loading and unloading workpieces, and multi-spindle grinding is programmable for cutting risers and gating, plus surface and internal grinding. Te center can be set up to grind different parts at the same time and pro- grammed without interrupting the production cycle. “It’s a larger machine than the original SAM 300, which is about a third the physical size and half the cost,” said Kevin Purdy, vice president of Hunter Automated Machin- ery Corp., which represents Maus in the USA. Te SAM 600G can be used for castings up to 200 kg and 520 mm. It has a swing reach of 700 mm. According to Purdy, incorporating automatic grinding into a metalcasting facility can help with space limitations and improve efficiency by reducing scrap. “When you are not producing scrap and one or two
machine operators can replace a dozen grinders, it doesn’t take long to see a return on investment,” Purdy said. “Te machine will pay for itself within a year to 18 months.” Maus grinding centers can be paired with a programming
