Spotlight on: Ekupholeni Mental Health and Trauma Centre

O


n a rainy Thursday morning in March, consultants from global corporate Bain and Company sat down with managers


from local East Rand NGO Ekupholeni Mental Health and Trauma Centre.


Companies like Bain are used to fielding


requests for financial support. But when Ekupholeni asked for a skills transfer session, Bain instantly agreed to assist.


Jonathan Friedland is a consultant at Bain and Company and sits on the board of Ekupholeni in a voluntary capacity. He acts as Treasurer and frequently gives insight on financial reporting practices and systems for increasing accountability and assuring transparency.


“Ekupholeni does a lot with very little. I thought Bain might be able to lend a hand in some way but I was not sure how,” says Friedland.


When Ekupholeni’s director, clinical psychologist Antje Manfroni, told the board at a recent meeting that one of her priorities for the year was to try to get the organisation’s middle management team proper management training, Jonathan thought he could help by approaching Bain Cares.


Bain Cares is Bain and Company’s social impact program and it operates worldwide. Each office has one or more Bain Cares champions who oversee local social impact initiatives and help share ideas and experiences. Bain employees from every level
