- Amanda Dormehl Partnership Vision: to make a difference through partnerships in the lives of those we serve.
2010. Conversation centred on how to create an effective and appropriate delivery platform. VUT was not the only Institution of Higher Learning that had approached the French Ministry of Education, but they were selected as the institution of choice to pilot the training and enjoys the continued support of the French Embassy in South Africa.
Fruition does not always happen overnight. It takes a clearly defined direction and many hours of dedicated participation by all stakeholders to design a project of this nature and magnitude. On 20 March 2012, VUT unveiled their French South African Schneider Electric Education Centre.
The VUT campus, situated in the arboreous boulevards of Vanderbijlpark, was abuzz with vitality and anticipation on the day of the unveiling. The ceremony was led by VUT’s Prof. Deon de Beer, Executive Director: Technology Transfer and Innovation. “It is my vision that this centre will act as a hub from which to support and service the community, educational institutions
and industry. It has been designed not only to assist the underprivileged to become a viable part of the local workplace, but also to allow professionals already within the market to further develop their skills” he commented.
Other dignitaries and speakers on the morning included Prof. Irene Moutlana, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Vaal University of Technology, Mr Michel le Dévéhat, a representative from the French Ministry of Education, His Excellency Jacques Lapouge, French Ambassador and Mr Carl Kleynhans, Country President for Schneider Electric South Africa.
The event concluded with a guided tour of the newly refurbished Education Centre. The centre facilities comprise class rooms and teaching laboratories. Attendees were regaled by interaction with higher level students on how certain displayed machinery and control panels operated. Eighteen of VUT lecturers have completed training on the use of the equipment and are extremely enthusiastic about the project’s first intake in April 2012.
