Event review: Project Management Festival of Knowledge IPMA / Cranefield College March 14th
- 15th M 2012 - Gaylin Jee
anagement Today magazine had the privilege of attending a Research Expert Seminar organised by
Cranefield College of Project and Programme Management and The International Project Managers Association (IPMA) Research Management Board in March.
The seminar forms part of a series of intimate meetings held across the globe under the IPMA banner of the ‘Festivals of Knowledge’. The theme was organisational performance management and the programme allowed access to the latest thinking from both academics and practitioners.
The international line up included Prof Dr Bane Semolic, Chairman of the IPMA Research Management Board & Head of Project and Technology Management Institute, University of Maribor, Slovenia; Prof Lief Henriksen from the Institute of Technology and Innovation at the University of Southern Denmark and Dr Les Squires, President of Group Commons LLC, USA. We also heard from Prof Dr Pieter Steyn and Prof Erik Schmikl of Cranefield College, project managers Lunga Msengana and Chris Uys from Vodacom and Transet respectively, and Wessel Pieters from the Association for Project Management South Africa.

It is clear that collectively a commitment is shared to understanding and moving forward on the issues impacting project and programme management in our current business climate. Our tranquil residential setting provided ample chance to debate and discuss the role that project and programme managers can play in terms of the sustainable performance and success of their organisations, and how they can be best- equipped to carry out that role.
We were graciously hosted by De Doornkraal Historic Country House Boutique Hotel in the quaint town of Riversdale, Western Cape. Riversdale is less than 100kms away from two of the most important sites in terms of our earliest human foot prints – the Blombos Cave and Pinnacle Point. So it was a nice thought by the organisers that Paleobotanist Dr John Anderson delivered a speech on the earliest evidence of the emergence of our human culture in this area, arguably the world’s prime biodiversity hotspot.
All in all, this festival was a perfect two days on the latest thinking and trends in this critical field.
