Make ACCA your qualification of choice

- Carol Butcher T

he Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is the world’s largest accountancy body. ACCA boasts some 140 000 members and 404 000 students globally, through a network of offices in over 170 countries.

ACCA provides new entrants into the sector

and well-seasoned professionals with training and business-relevant qualifications, which embrace global best practice. “ACCA is proud of its emphasis on professional values, ethics and governance. It is also proud of the fact that it works closely with multinationals and SMMEs to promote global standards and support,” says Head of ACCA South Africa, Nadine Kater.

Since its establishment more than a

century ago, ACCA has been committed to dismantling artificial barriers, which stand in the way of people of application and ability becoming professional accountants. “This business model is well-suited to a developing country such as South Africa, where people have not necessarily had the opportunity to complete their schooling or obtain a formal qualification,” Kater explains.

ACCA SA offers the Foundations in Accountancy (NQF level 5) and the ACCA qualification (NQF level 8).

The only requirements for admission into the Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) (NQF level 5) is that candidates are 16 years or older, literate and numerate. “Having completed FIA candidates are able to further

their studies via the accelerated progression platform ACCA offers from the CAT qualification to the ACCA qualification, allowing them to become fully-fledged accounting professionals,” Kater explains.

Flexible entry and exit points, flexible modes

of delivery, together with award certification make the FIA suite of qualifications very attractive to employers and employees alike.

“The FIA awards are also well-suited to

meeting Continuous Professional Development (CPD) objectives, enabling candidates to hone their skills in a particular area,” Kater observes.

ACCA members hold highly sought after

positions in public practice, the public sector, the financial services and the corporate sector.

“The fact that ACCA qualifications are

recognised internationally, as well as among BRICS countries, makes ACCA the qualification of choice for many South Africans in the accounting profession,” Kater concludes. ACCA is playing an ever expanding role in Latin America, with Brazil taking steps towards the adoption of IFRS (International Finance Reporting Standards). ACCA has national offices in Russia, a special programme for CAs qualified in India, and offices in China.
