Swartland Winery introduces “My Swartland” A proud celebration of the region, the people and the wines


I


t is more than 60 years since Swartland Winery first broke away from the auspices of the KWV and began to make wine for themselves. At the time, they were one of the first wineries in the country to do this and only the second in the Swartland region. Over the years, the winery has seen many changes in winemaking, in wine styles and in the very customers themselves, but throughout it all, they have succeeded in rooting themselves in the heart of the Swartland community and region. They understand the needs of the growers and farmers around them and create a strong, sustainable business, producing affordable, quality wines at all price levels.


The winery has created an innovative website and marketing campaign entitled ‘My Swartland’ which shares stories of the people and places of the area, and shows what makes this region so unique and special. From the people who deliver grapes to the winery, to restaurants, to local

personalities and legends – every aspect of what makes the Swartland life and experience will be on the website for all to engage with and enjoy. People can read of places such as Lowensvlei Flower Farm which has empowered its employees to set up their own micro- businesses organising flower arrangements for social events in the community. “We don’t sell flowers,” says owner Cilla Lowen, “we sell memories.” Or Tannie Naomi Basson who, since 9 April 1987, has baked 50 000 milk tarts for Kontreispens in Malmesbury, with the delivery date of every single tart entered in a ledger. “Just in case the people from the Guinness Book of Records check up on me!” she laughs with sparkly blue eyes. Altogether, she reckons she has baked 11km of milk tart over the years.
