The 20 year growth plan
During the build up to the BRICS summit, President Zuma announced the country’s infrastructure plans for the next 20 years of growth.
To Russia with love
South Africa’s ambassador to Russia also placed great emphasis on the ties between the two countries: “South Africa is the largest trading economy in Africa and contains 25% outputs of all Africa’s economies and is also one of the most active and strongest players in the continent,” Mandisi Mpahlwa said addressing delegates at the Investment and Trade Initiative (ITI) in Moscow, Russia, in March.”It is therefore important that trading partners, especially Russia and neighbouring countries, expand their export footprint through our formal structures,” he continued. As with the other ITIs with Brasil and India, the DTI aims to help both South African companies new to the market as well as existing exporters to the region. Mpahlwa concluded: “These and other formal forums such as BRICS will lead our work and increase trade between the two countries.”
“It is about connecting rural communities to economic opportunities through building dams and irrigation systems, connecting farms and villages to the energy grid and building schools and clinics. Our view is that cities should not be the only places with lights, roads or tap water.” Zuma added: “I invite you, as the business community of BRICS, to collaborate with us to explore these infrastructure opportunities. We are convinced that we can negotiate new types of mutually beneficial developmental agreements with BRICS countries on infrastructure development.”
