Event preview: 5th SA Innovation Summit Leading Innovation: Africa’s Competitive Edge August 28 - 30th
2012 T
he 5th SA Innovation Summit, Leading Innovation: Africa’s Competitive Edge, will be held in Johannesburg on 29-30th
August with pre-summit innovation workshops on 28th We often hear about the challenges facing Africa, but seldom do we hear about the innovation and creativity emerging throughout the continent. Africa is now amongst the fastest-growing economic regions in the world, creating significant business opportunities in a wide range of industries. Key to the growth surge is government reforms that create greater political stability, improve the macroeconomic environment, and energise the business environment. The question to ourselves should be: how do we seize these opportunities? How do we ensure we unlock value to the benefit of Africa and stimulate growth, employment, education. How do we reduce poverty, address health and service delivery issues, tap into green energy and leave a legacy for our children? In this year’s summit we will explore the following themes: • Leading innovation – required skills and competencies. How do you unleash creativity and support a culture which embraces innovation as a leader? • Business creativity and idea generation. Is it possible to measure the impact of creativity on bottom line results? • What is Africa’s competitive edge? How do we unlock innovation in Africa? What can the rest of the world learn from Africa?
• The impact of information and
communications technologies (ICT): exploring best practices for a knowledge base economy and innovation systems
• Innovation 2.0: Redefining the boundaries between producers and consumers. Leveraging emerging social and technological trends and the desire and capacity of customers and citizens to create value for themselves and their peers • “The space between” – linking government, academia, business and the community. What enabling platforms and frameworks will support the type of collaboration needed to support regional innovation?
• Inclusive innovation (equitable, cohesive) – innovation for the 90% of the population. Too often innovation is focused on developing products and services which serves the need for the top 10% of the population only. We want to challenge this and look at innovation for the masses.
