Accounting and education is in my blood

ead of ACCA SA (The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants South Africa), Nadine Kater has a passion for accounting, education and training. “I come from a line of accountants and teachers. My parents were both accountants and my grandparents were teachers. I come from a strong tradition of accounting and education: accounting and education is in my blood,” Kater explains.
Whether she is speaking to her children, ACCA employees or addressing employers, Kater says she always finds herself reciting former South African President, Nelson Mandela’s words: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

She adds, “Education is the key, which will enable South Africa to unlock its true potential, and in the process, create a better life for all South Africans.”
Kater was appointed Head of ACCA SA in May 2011. Prior to taking up this appointment, she was the COO of Fasset (The Seta for Finance, Accounting, Management Consulting and Other Financial Services), a position which she held for approximately six years. Accounting degree through the University of Johannesburg, majoring in Accounting, Business Management and Industrial Psychology; and obtaining a Higher Diploma in Education through the University of the Witwatersrand, Kater taught Accounting for nine years at the Chris J. Botha Secondary School. She was also a school and provincial volley ball coach during this period.
Her teaching career was followed by a
three and a half year stint at SAIPA (South African Institute of Public Accountants) as National Training Manager, followed by a ten-year stint at Fasset. “I was instrumental in Fasset taking the lead in the registration and implementation of learnerships in South Africa. Fasset registered the first six learnerships,” she recalls.
While in Fasset’s employ, Kater completed Management Professional (PMP) through the Project Management Institute and a Masters in Business Administration through the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS).
Kater has always believed that “unless it is measured, it never gets done”. She explains, “In developing countries such as our own, resources are scarce and should not be squandered. It is very important therefore that employers, professional bodies and training institutions quantify the Return on Investment (ROI) for training”.
Her MBA research report focused on ‘The
perceived value of the return on investment of accounting learnerships for employers’. “Based on my research findings, I concluded that learnerships are playing a very important role in skills development in South Africa.
