Finland caters for the future but has the UK forgotten about Standard Class customers? A batch of new restaurant cars is being talked about for use on Finland’s long distance trains from Helsinki to the North of the country. This is good news for Finnish rail customers who can continue to enjoy the double delights of travelling by train and having a great meal at the same time for years to come. Apparently, the new design includes a buffet


bar and kitchen with meal service seating, plus, surprisingly, a second bar counter area for use at peak times. This will allow for extra serving capacity when the train is busy and is a novel way to reduce queuing at buffet counters. It also allows the operator to offer more choice to the passenger, perhaps having a difference in products between the two areas. This investment is really showing a

methods of service are planned in order to cope with the large numbers of people that these trains will hopefully carry. After all whilst we all know that First Class custom is important, there are normally far more Standard Class passengers and even they need to eat and drink!
