Agenda T

he teams in our Samvo Betting Cafés are expect- ing a busy month, with some big

Premier League matches and a number of other high profile events. It’s a tough few weeks ahead for Man- chester United in particular, who visit Arsenal and Chelsea before hosting Liv- erpool. Those three results could be crucial to Sir Alex’s title hopes. On the same day that United go to the Emi- rates, Manchester City host Spurs - that’s sure to be a busy day for us.

The Masters is always a welcome January distrac- tion for snooker fans and a new venue in Alexandra Palace promises to breathe life into the tournament. The same week, the Australian Open begins in Melbourne. The time difference means it’s not ideal for us in the UK but there’s always a fantas- tic appetite for the first Grand Slam tennis tourna- ment of the year.

There will be plenty of interest in the Six Nations too, considering what has happened with England. Our punters think it’s going to be between France and Wales and I don’t disagree.

DAVID MILLER Senior marketing manager Samvo

As we move in to 2012 is it going to be Happy New Cheer for punters? Well there’s certainly no short- age of sport to have a flutter on in January or February, whatever your preference. Spread bettors love their in- play football betting so it will be interesting to see what effect the all-Manches- ter FA Cup third round tie has on City and United’s league form in the following

weeks. 22 January could be significant when City host Spurs and United travel to Arsenal. Then, of course, it’s the start of the Champions and Europa League knock- out phases in February. Ahead of Cheltenham in March, the big focus for horse racing punters will be on the Festival Trials Day at Cheltenham on 28 January when runners and riders will be watched closely for signs of how they may or may not perform in the jumps season’s gala event.

Cricket is perfectly suited to spread betting and so Spreadex clients will be chomping at the bit to get stuck into the action when England face Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates, with the first Test on 17 January. Elsewhere, January marks the start of the tennis season, with the Australian Open from 16 January, as well as the start of golf’s USPGA and European tours. Oh, and there’s the small matter of the Masters Snooker from 15 January, now moved to Alexandra Palace under the steward- ship of Barry Hearn, and the Super Bowl on 5 February.

ANDY MCKENZIE Marketing communications managerSpreadex

During January/February horse racing starts its slow build up to the crescendo which is the Cheltenham Festival and on the 28 January Cheltenham itself provides us with Festival trials day. A great day of racing it will hopefully shed some light to where the big prizes will land come the Greatest Show on Turf. On the sports front, the NFL season culminates in Indianapolis with Super- bowl 46. Will the two red hot

Ante Post: What the bookies say

A new year brings a new influx of high quality sporting events and possibly more betting on the Europa League than there has been for a long time. There’s also cricket, golf, rugby, tennis, snooker, NFL and even horseracing.

divisional favourites Green Bay (13/8) and New England (4/1) meet on February 5th, or can Baltimore (12/1) or New Orleans (5/1) upset the odds? As they say in America anything can happen on ‘any given Sunday’.

February also sees the return of the Champions League; although the Man- chester clubs dominate the Premier league their early exit in Europe leaves Arsenal (22/1) and Chelsea (14/1) battling to salvage some home pride.

For the cricket fans, January and February pro- vides two intriguing Test series. India travel to Aus- tralia while England will try to maintain their status as the Number 1 test team in the world with a three match

My Diary: Nigel Seeley

As the media manager for one of the newest names on the betting services block - Bet Butler - Nigel Seeley understandably has a number of media appointments over the next month.

T

he start of the year is always a busy time for me and it’s no dif- ferent in 2012. On Friday I’ll be appearing on Sports Tonight Live, a TV show I regularly guest on with other representatives from the sports betting industry, namely Alan Alger from Blue Square and Sport- ingbet’s Russ Wiseman, as well as poker player Neil Channing. As you can imagine, there’s always plenty of banter.

Immediately after that, I’m zooming straight up to St James’ Park to see Queen’s Park Rangers play Newcastle. This time, I’ll be leaving my Bet Butler hat at home - I’m a big QPR fan and this is a big game for us. It’ll be two Newcastle matches in a week for me as the Magpies visit Fulham the following Saturday. Bet Butler is the official

online and in-stadium betting partner to Fulham FC, so this time it’s more business than pleasure, but believe me, there’s plenty of pleasure in being asked to go and watch football every other weekend! As with the rest of the industry, on

Tuesday 24 January myself and several of my Bet Butler colleagues will be making our way to Earls Court for ICE, where no doubt a few of you are reading this! We’re not exhibit- ing, but we have crammed in plenty of meetings with journalists and potentially useful contacts, as well as catching up with old colleagues and contacts in the gaming trade. It seems like everyone in the gaming industry knows each other and nowhere is that more evident than at ICE, where you sometimes struggle to take three paces without bumping

evening. After ICE, we’re off to Old Billingsgate Market for the London Affiliate Conference where we will be signing up affiliate partners from our base at the Income Access stand. On 11 February there’s more foot-

into someone you know! On the Wednesday of ICE it will be a bit of a balancing act as the Bet Butler traders are also anticipating one of the busiest evenings of the year, when Liverpool and Man City contest the second leg of their Carling Cup semi-final. So, depend- ing on how we go, I may well be required back at the office that

ball and perhaps the biggest non- trading game of Bet Butler’s season. Stoke City, another Premier League club that we partner, visit Craven Cottage. I’ll be there with our lovely Bet Butler promotional girls dishing out special offers and competitions, so please come and say hello if you’re there.

Add in a couple of ‘tipster’ appear- ances on Reuter’s weekly Sports Spread show which goes out every Friday plus a regular slot that I have on BBC Radio 5 Live each Saturday and that’s pretty much the month ahead for me.

series against Pakistan starting on 21 January.

PETER BUTLER Trading manager Taylor Made Betting

The Australian Open and the start of the Six Nations are the two big betting events to kick the year off with, along- side the usual weekly offer- ing of top quality football and horse racing. Novak Djokovic arrives at the first Major of the year in enough form to warrant favouritism (7/4) with Federer, Nadal and Murray taking up their usual positions in the market for a tournament of this nature. Despite the time difference tennis punters will be eagerly awaiting the return of top quality Grand

Slam action with the usual degree of enthusiasm. In the women’s a resurgent Serena Williams is the current market leader from Samatha Storsur. Despite their tumultuous World Cup campaign England cur- rently trade as joint second favourites for the Six Nations with France under- standably the market leaders after their exploits in New Zealand. Wales were the biggest market movers in the post World-Cup period with that superb run also responsible for a large volume of patriotic bets on the Welsh to win the triple crown and the Grand Slam.
