The Greatest Show on Earth!
f there’s a better show in the world on anything – including London and Broadway theatreland – then I’d love to see it. For me ICE is an annual joy, three days of stimulating experiences around new ideas and applications that puts Earls Court in January on a level all of its own. We’re all busy, it’s a tough fact of life that every business in 2012 involves work- ing harder just to stand still, but I have ring-fenced January 24-26th as three days where I do nothing else than wander round ICE, network and effectively get a window into the future. I know I will come away a better journalist and betting indus- try enthusiast by seeing what the world is up to, and also by meeting and chatting to folk. It’s hard work in a way, I know each day I will fin- ish up exhausted, but there’s noth- ing better than exhaustion through having fun.
Please do come along to the Racing Post Café for a chat. There will be plenty of my colleagues from our paper/media operation to talk with, and I’ll be there too, other than the times I will be wandering around. I’ll have a big Racing Post badge on so if you don’t know me, you should be able to track me down. Let me know any-
thing you’ve seen that you’ve enjoyed. The Racing Post/SIS Betting Shop Manager of the Year Andy Bennett [of Scotbet, Selkirk] will be there too, and writing a live blog. Make no mistake; ICE is enormous. In fact some people can find it a bit off-putting. But one of the reasons we’ve created the Racing Post Café is to offer a central meet-
ideas are lifeblood for every business, and if I was, say, managing a racecourse, I’d want to know what the rest of the gambling industry is up to. It’s a massive pie, there are enormous opportunities for everyone, and whether through the expansion of in- play betting, mobile phone advances or the potential of US deregulation, 2012 is tremen- dously exciting.
ICE is an annual joy, a must visit
for everyone involved in betting and racing
ing point, a comfort zone if you like, a name that everyone is familiar with.
Personally, I love the cacophony of ICE. It has a huge range of stands, and yes some of them offer products or are from regions that have no direct bearing on Racing Post. But in the same way that a foreign country can be stimulating, I find myself looking at the way different people do things and wonder if there is an adaption that just might give the Racing Post an edge. This is why ICE should be a must visit for everyone involved in the management of the betting and racing industries. New
When an industry expert like Warwick Bartlett is positively drool- ing about what’s ahead in the US, we should all take note [Warwick is nor- mally pretty cautious!]. He describes the Department of Justice ruling [that exist-
ing gaming prohibitions were only applica- ble to sports betting and not other forms of gaming that could include internet poker, casino games and lotteries] as an “impor- tant game changer and many of the major players and main beneficiaries will either be exhibiting at ICE or walking the aisles of the exhibition. ICE is the first industry-wide opportunity to sit down, discuss the oppor- tunities, compare suppliers and arrive at what could be some pretty significant commercial decisions.”
Join him and me in savouring every moment of ICE.
