Customer demand for mobile
Virgin Games CEO Simon Burridge said that the launch of Virgin Mobile Casino is a simple response to customer demand. “While the gaming industry has been on the cusp of a mobile revolution for some time, 2011 has really been the year when the planets have aligned to make mobile gaming a more attractive proposition. We put customers at the heart of what we do and the mobile launch is yet another example of this. We can’t afford not to do this - it’s what our customers want and it’s where the online gaming industry is heading.”
supportive handsets, but more as a reaction in terms of meeting their customers’ demands. For example, Apple’s initial stance on gaming has arguably softened because of the commercial risk of gaming customers moving to a rival which does allow them to do what they want to do. Samsung appear to have caught on and are now actively promoting their latest devices with gaming as a key selling point.
The engagement needs to be wider than just technology. Gaming, or more traditionally gambling, carries a millstone of morality and ethics and these also need to be addressed in respect of responsibility and keeping customers safe. A good example of gaming and mobile operators working together for the greater good is Vodafone and their partnership with Gaming Corp where Gaming Corp provide the games, but Vodafone’s Content Control system is used, amongst other things, to ensure age compliance.
I cannot see any reason why this cannot be extended into a wider discussion as to how the network providers can assist in terms of data and technology sharing to include not just age verification but device location, ownership and usage in the constant battle to keep gaming clean and crime free.
So what is the next step?
Perhaps a forum or network group is a little too ambitious at this stage, but maybe the starting point could be to invite mobile/network operators to the established industry events and forums, such as Cybercrime and Gamshield, to start the process of looking at how we can work better together. The gaming industry has, over the years, built good working partnerships with law enforcement, technology providers and payment providers which have proved invaluable in the fight against crime. There is no reason to assume a similar alliance with the mobile community would be any less valuable.
